John Rockefeller on Cybersecurity Legislation

See additional comments on Tea Party Nation.

John Rockefeller testified at a Senate hearing for the need of a civilian agency to coordinate our civilian cybersecurity under the supervision of the Department of Homeland Security. Janet Napolitano is seated behind him during his testimony: one department to rule them all.

While our personal liberty has been under attack by the government for reasons of national security, when will we understand that security is never worth the price of our freedom. Since Anonymous recently took down the CIA website, could this be another example of never letting a crisis go to waste?

The examples outlined by Sen. Rockefeller such as planes flying into each other or trains carrying toxic materials causing explosions are merely scare tactics to increase the government’s oversight of our lives.

“Hackers are stealing information from Fortune 500 companies breaking into the networks of our government and security agencies and toying with the networks that power our economy.”

Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D)

“A Norton study last year calculated the cost of global cybercrime at $114 billion annually. When combined with the value of time victims lost due to cybercrime, this figure grows to $388 billion globally, which Norton described as ‘significantly more’ than the global black market in marijuana, cocaine and heroin combined.”

Sen. Susan Collins (Rino)

“Alongside terrorism, cybersecurity is perhaps the number one threat facing our nation today but many obstacles exist that prevent the cooperation and coordination needed to deter this growing threat.”

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D)

“This bill would begin to arm us for battle in a war against the cyber mayhem that is being waged against us by our nation’s enemies, organized criminal gangs, and terrorists who would use the Internet against us as surely as they turned airliners into guided missiles.”

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I)

Here is the complete bill for your consideration.
