Washington Post Editorial Board: “Only Mischief Makers Promote Gun Sanctuaries”

The Washington Post Editorial Board.

VIGILANTISM, WITH its alluring tingle of defiance and frontier justice, conjures a cinematic idea of American individualism. A similar impulse is at work among advocates of the so-called Second Amendment sanctuary movement, a trend in mainly rural counties declaring they will refuse to enforce restrictive state gun laws. Both are examples of individuals who, lacking legal authority, put themselves above the law, thereby promoting chaos.

In Virginia, the movement has lately become a fad, spurred by legislative election results that will, starting in January, hand pro-gun control Democrats control of both houses of the General Assembly for the first time in a generation. With a Democrat also in the governor’s mansion, some rural Republicans are raising the specter of mass gun confiscations — and pronouncing themselves Second Amendment Sanctuaries.

[ … ]

In Virginia, local governing bodies in a few dozen Appalachian southwest and central Piedmont counties have passed or are considering resolutions declaring themselves gun sanctuaries. In many, longtime gun owners are hunters who say their way of life is threatened by liberal lawmakers in Richmond.

This is nonsense fanned by mischief-makers with an agenda. In fact, the gun legislation with the best chance of passage would promote public safety by requiring universal background checks — a measure with overwhelming bipartisan support among Virginians in public opinion surveys. Other bills with broad support would limit the number and types of weapons that can be sold. For instance, by restricting handgun purchases by individuals to one per month — an anti-trafficker measure that was the law in Virginia for 20 years before it was repealed in 2012.

The only cases in which gun confiscation could take place would be if the legislature enacts a “red flag” bill, which would allow law enforcement authorities to take away firearms from individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others. Such laws, which have received bipartisan support in many states, generally depend on an order from a judge who would consider evidence presented in court.

Local authorities who refuse such orders would be thumbing their noses not just at state law but also at judicial orders — and they should be removed from office and prosecuted. Short of that, however, the gun sanctuary movement seems mainly symbolic, another manifestation of growing division in an increasingly tribal nation.

It would be too laborious to fisk this completely, but let’s make a few important points.

First, notice the literary device right out of the gate.  Vigilantism = Rugged American Individualism, or at least it conjures that image.  They could have said that hard work and self reliance = rugged American individualism, or that a free market economy conjures images of rugged American individualism.

But they didn’t.  They equated rugged American individualism with vigilantism.  This is no mistake, for they like neither one.  The inside-the-beltway culture holds the collectivist value system in high regard.  It takes a village, you know.

  1. David says:

So what would they call people who promote sanctuaries for illegal aliens? Asking for a friend.

  2. bogsidebunny says:

Only Democrat Vote harvesters create illegal alien sanctuaries.

  3. Rabbi Will says:

    I’ve been called worse!

  4. Citizen says:

My Virginia county’s Board of Supervisors takes up the matter this evening. I’ll be there.
The Virginia General Assembly convenes in January, but various anti-2A bills have already been pre-filed. I’ve read the texts of those, and I anticipate more such bills. With anti-2A Dem majorities in both houses plus an anti-2A Dem Governor they may all pass. The new laws would become effective July 1. (Effective immediately if passed with a super-majority but that’s unlikely.) Depending on what bills pass and with what language, my spouse and I and all our grown kids and their spouses could be considered criminals effective July 1. Not a pleasant prospect. A local 2nd Amendment Sanctuary declaration is a way for the citizenry to say, “NO!” I hope the movement gives the anti-2A legislators pause, but I’m not hopeful.

The publication is a mouthpiece of the intelligence agencies which are fomenting the treasonous coup against the people. Their articles are intended to deceive the people and subvert the nation.

  6. tuco22 says:

No doubt equating them also to those who “bitterly cling to guns and religion.”

  7. Forearmed says:

The more anti-gunners try and corral us with laws the more we are going to strike out against that tyranny. Creating Safe Sanctuary Gun Zones is one of the best push-backs I have yet heard of. Anti-gunners are loons who have no idea what they are asking, specifically because they do not look at the FBI facts, because it will put them out of business. Most of them are too stupid to understand that it only appears that killings are as numerous as they are because of the WWW making it appear that it much worse than in years past when all we had was the news papers and the TV giving us the news. It is actually less worse than before, and the statistics prove that the more legally owned guns by citizens the less crime there is.
NOW WHY DON’T THEY TOUT THOSE FIGURES YOU WONDER…….

  8. Jay says:

Anyone or any government that wants to disarm you has already made plans to kill you if you will not submit to their enslavement plans. We’ve seen it 17 times with 17 genocides in the last century.

  9. adam says:

We are the only country in the world that has a Second Amendment.
Find one government in all of history that banned it’s own ARMED FORCES from “Keeping and Bearing” ARMS.
Find one government in the history of humanity that felt a need to document a “RIGHT” for it’s ARMED FORCES to possess ARMS.
Oppressive Governments are ALWAYS banning the People’S RIGHT to arms.
The claim that the Founding Fathers wrote the 2nd Amendment to give Our ARMED FORCES a “right” to keep and carry ARMS is S-T-U-P-I-D.
The only reason for the Second Amendment is to clearly spell-out the GOD GIVEN RIGHT of INDIVIDUALS to keep & bear ARMS.
The only reason for the BILL(list) of RIGHTS was to codify INDIVIDUALS’ GOD GIVEN RIGHTS.
Has there ever been a government that was not chock full of it’s “rights” up to and including declaring itself to be the Lord God Almighty?! (Rome, Egypt, Israel, etc)
Does the 1st Amendment mean the GOVERNMENT is allowed to give speeches? Try shutting up any Politician. But THEY would LOVE to shut YOU up, hence the FIRST Amendment.
Anyone who tells you the 2nd Amendment applies to the Army or State Militia, is telling you they think you are STUPID.
There has NEVER been a government that felt it had to codify it’s army’s/soldier’s “RIGHT” to “Keep and BEAR ARMS” because there has NEVER been a government that refused to allow It’s own soldiers to KEEP and BEAR ARMS!
The Second Amendment was written for the People, like the other 9 Amendments in the Bill of Rights. This was confirmed by the SCOTUS in the DC vs Heller decision, where they stated that the “People” in the Second Amendment were the same “People” that are mentioned in the First and Fourth Amendment.
The 2nd Amendment clearly codifies the “right of the PEOPLE to keep and bear arms”, and certainly not “the Militia”.
Why would “the Militia”, a type of army manned by citizen-soldiers as opposed to full-time “regulars”, need a constitutional amendment to guarantee they have the right “to keep and bear arms”?
Is there any specific statement anywhere in the Constitution that the army Congress is empowered to raise has the “right to keep and bear arms”? Of course not. …………. That is assumed.

the 2nd amendment,, specifies that the RIGHT to bear arms is the right of the people,, NOT the militia,,,, it is the people who will make up the militia,, but the right is not the right of a “well regulated militia” it is the right of the people, We the people were BORN WITH UNALIENABLE RIGHTS, meaning they come from GOD.
Epiphany … the Left insists there is NO GOD so they can deny your GOD given RIGHTS.

  10. Arizona says:

MAKE a list of who these commies are,THEN REMEMBER EVERYONE LIVES SOMEWHERE,and night time is the right time….cross bows are wonderful weapons, and quite to…WHEN your at meetings,LOOK around, those bastards who are protecting them are your enemies too…

  11. Every State signed off on Our Constitution (The States created Our federal government & Our Constitution)!

Our Constitution is Our Highest “Law of the land”!

“No legislative act, therefore, contrary to the Constitution, can be valid.” — Federalist 78

Our Constitution clearly says: “… shall not be infringed”.

ANY & All gun laws (State & federal) outside Our 2nd amendment are NOT valid & extremely evil!

Furthermore, the second amendment can NEVER even be legally repealed (Amended) as it is an untouchable, as is the freedom-of-speech and all Our Bill-of-Rights (pre-dating Our Constitution & given by God).

  12. ALL the problems we are seeing today concerning guns are the results of the continuing compromise that started many years ago.

Outlawing machine guns – now that is complete insanity! Our military & foreign military has machine guns & the people should always outgun government.

“The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any bands of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States.” — Noah Webster

Outlawing a felons God-given right to Self-Preservation & and the protection of his family -- IS another example of complete insanity!

A Citizen that has completed and paid their dept to society is a restored Citizen and has every right to the 1st Law of Nature.

The 1st Law of Nature -- the Duty of Self-Preservation! Self-preservation IS a “self-evident” truth!

IF a man can’t be trusted with a gun, THEN he can’t be trusted with a knife, a car, a bat, etc, and must be locked up and kept out of a Free society for the rest of his life.

Declawing a FREE man is a cruel and unusual punishment.

“Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.” — Amendment VIII, Our Constitution (Bill-of-Rights, an Untouchable)

Compromise of God-given Rights has serious repercussions.

NRA = negotiating rights away since 1934

    • Jay says:

The people that can hurt you the most are the ones that you trusted because you thought they were on your side. I have wondered about the NRA myself a few times.

  13. TheTruthBurns says:

Don’t worry Washington Post when the Hot Civil War starts All of you Commies along with the other MSM, Yahoo, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, Google, etc will be on the Top of the lists of Traitors Marked for DEATH.

  14. Jay says:

When Globalists, Communists, whatever you want to call them take over positions of influence, be it media, government, banking, religion or education, they are patient. First they try to brainwash the kids to rebel against their parents and the Biblical values our nation was founded on, then they try to disarm them physically as well as spiritually, mentally, morally and emotionally. All along keeping them ignorant of the constitution and the Bible that grants their freedoms and teaches them how to live and prosper. But they are patient and will take whatever the population will give them just a little bit at a time. They will take machine guns first and for all the wrong excuses and reasons, and women, who now have the right to vote, and homosexuals who have no morals or backbone will go right along with the scam. Then they will give some flimsy excuses for taking each and every firearm that citizens could possibly use to defend against United Nations troops which are nothing but foreign invaders disguised as peacekeepers in order to plunder and rape wherever they go.
