We did the same across N. Africa and i imagine we’ll do it to the rest of the ME, too.

On a related note, why are we not allies with Russia? Is it just habit from the Cold War?

There have been many occasions when we allied with Russia and have passed actionable intel to help us. The biggest most recent, I personally know of is 911. They told us Al-Queda was going to hit us soon and in a big way, in the US. They literally said, “we don’t know where or when but we know its going to happen” weeks before it happened.
The Russian’s must be laughing their asses off with Obama the Idiot, wannabe socialist.
