The world has gone mad. Communist mobs occupy sectors in major American cities and receive support from local and national Democrat politicians. The media (and former President Barack Obama) characterize racist mobs rioting, looting, burning and extorting as “peaceful demonstrators.”
The Democratic candidate for president, Joe Biden, and his running mate, Kamala Harris, are threatening to eviscerate the principles of federalism and the Bill of Rights, with special emphasis on gutting the Second Amendment. There’s a good chance they will win the popular vote, and current polls show them on track to dominate key battleground states for an electoral win. (2016 Polls showed Hillary on top, too, but Trump is inarguably more besieged from all sides today.)
Add to that so many Americans now afraid to speak their minds because of the devastation the so-called “cancel culture” can bring upon them. You just have to be accused of being a racist to have the mob pronounce its verdict. That, by the way, is one of Harris’ platform pledges – to add “haters” to the “terror watchlist,” and to declare such state-created pariah’s “prohibited persons,” forbidden to possess a gun under penalty of felony sentencing, all without the seemingly obsolete legal concept of “due process” slowing anyone down.
Deny it or not, gun owners will face a binary choice in November—either cast a vote for Donald Trump, a man who has many times taken the fire out of their bellies with actions that belied his 2016 campaign promises, or Joe Biden. True, there are third parties, but no one advocating for them is able to refute the way the numbers will work out: Any vote not for Trump works to Biden’s advantage.
“There’s no voting our way out of this,” the more bellicose voices on gun boards and in blog comments sections will declare. “Molon labe!”
Ya gotta wonder how many of these would-be warriors have ever actually involved themselves in using the remarkable system bequeathed by the Founders before deciding that “Civil War 2” will be the less demanding course of action. If that turns out to be the case, ya also gotta wonder how many anonymous chatroom tiger talkers, who won’t lift a finger while things are still easy, will prove to have what it takes when they become cataclysmic.
“If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival,” Winston Churchill noted in an earlier world crisis. “There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.”
I’m not sure how true that would still be when things start to look hopeless, and how many bloviators would instead trade it all for three hots and a cot in a FEMA camp.
So, how the hell did we get to the point where we’re even talking about this, anyway? Where did the America most of us grew up in go, anyway?
