Drones, Drones Everywhere

A U.S. naval drone has been found floating  off the coast of the Philippines – hundreds of miles away from the nearest  American military base.

The fishermen who found the 10ft orange  device originally reported that it could have been a bomb, prompting local  officials to send munitions experts out into the sea.

But when it was determined to be safe, the  unmanned aerial vehicle was taken into the care of the Filipino  navy.

It should be reasonably clear to you at this point how the enemies of liberty intend to monitor, harass, and otherwise abuse us – from above.  It’s not just a bang-for-the-buck thing – it has to do with maintaining the ‘detachment’ of the oppressing force.  Every previous tyrant in the history of the world has had a substantial challenge in maintaining control of their own forces – allowing them to remain among the oppressed population too long tends to stimulate empathy among a measurable portion of the OPFOR.  Typically, this has been mitigated by frequent rotations in assignments, to prevent the development of personal relations between OPFOR and the oppressed, but this also hinders the mission, as the best intel has traditionally come from inter-personal contact between operators and target(s).  Drones completely change that dynamic.

In the age of drones, many of these challenges are alleviated by the drones’ combination of direct and indirect surveillance capabilities, including substantial data capture/processing mechanisms to surveil things like wireless LAN and cellular/CDMA communications, coupled with the fact that present drone technology includes the ability to carry a variety of active weapons systems.

For drone pilots/operators, the issue of detachment is moot – they work comfortable, managed shifts in a control center hundreds or thousands of miles away, and never have any direct contact with the populations they opress.  In addition, drone operators are completely ‘interchangeable’ on a moments notice – including the ability for an ‘alternate operator’ to shadow the primary operator on a critical mission (or when a given mission becomes critical), and assume command of the drone to complete the mission if the primary operator fails to comply with command directives.

These drones are relatively small, quiet, and difficult to target while in flight, so the use of physical weapons against such a drone in flight by FreeFOR is effectively nil.  As the ground facilities may be quite distant, and will be heavily guarded, Liberty minded technologists should focus on electronic counter-measures against these weapons platforms – jamming and/or hijacking of the control and data links are the key strategies to prevail against drones.  Think “Directed Energy” and you will have a good idea of the ideal anti-drone technologies…
