Are you old enough to remember when this sign was prominently displayed in the windows of almost all businesses ?
This was a foundational principle of Liberty … the right to contract, or not, for any reason.
It is a remnant from a time when civilized men and women saw benefit in the human ability to discriminate: to notice and understand that one thing is different from another thing : to recognize a difference between things.
Read the sign above one more time … it does not say what Liberals want it to say:
Therefore they are outraged that a new Indiana law affirms people should not be forced to conduct business when it conflicts with their religions principles.
Supporters say the law prevents the state from forcing people to provide services contrary to their religion.
Similar bills are being considered across the US as court rulings have made gay marriage legal in more states.
Activists have encouraged a boycott of Indiana after the US state enacted a “religious freedom” law, which they say discriminates against gay people.
It’s a shame Indiana didn’t go all the way and fully defend Liberty of Contract.
Read about it … then live it.
But Hans, if they don’t stomp out all of our inclination to refuse contract… then we might remember that we CAN refuse contract with the gubbermint, just as well as we can with any individual. And that is the single most intolerable though in the world, if you’re a sniveling progressive demon.
Sounds like you’re referring to an important, un-enumerated Right …
The Right to Ignore the State

Those un-enumerated rights are also un-innumerable. That’s what’s so important about them; they are many as well as manifold; and even while remaining undefined, they have force and vitality. Those rights amount to life itself, because without them our force and vitality evaporates away, and we are reduced to soul-less automatons -- slaves -- with all that that implies, both for us, and our culture.
Indeed, is there anything more important?
The best rejoinder to the harpies who scream about “discrimination” when you bring up freedom of contract goes like this:
“Oh, so you want to bring back slavery, then.”
This usually gets them sputtering. After a moment there’ll be some sort of denial, at which point you say:
“Look, you’re smart enough to understand this, so listen closely. If I can’t refuse to serve you, that means you can force me to work for you. Isn’t forced labor what we used to call slavery?”
And you walk away.
Do Not allow the conversation to continue beyond that. You have to make that the last word. Otherwise, the rationalizations will begin and utterly obliterate your point from his consciousness.
This doesn’t work all the time, but I’ve had a fair amount of success with it.
