Congress waited six years to repeal the Tonkin Gulf Resolution after it opened the bloody floodgates for the Vietnam War in August 1964.
If that seems slow, consider the continuing failure of Congress to repeal the “war on terror” resolution — the Authorization for Use of Military Force — that sailed through, with just one dissenting vote, three days after 9/11.
Prior to casting the only “no” vote, Congresswoman Barbara Lee spoke on the House floor. “As we act,” she said, “let us not become the evil that we deplore.”
“We, the people, still believe that enduring security and lasting peace do not require perpetual war,” President Obama said in his 2013 inaugural address, after four years of doing more than any other president in U.S. history to normalize perpetual war as a bipartisan enterprise.
sorry, Bob, I will never in a million years equate our troops with the terrorists…we know where this comes from -- be careful who you associate yourself with…in particular the flowery anti-war rhetoric from those who will steal your freedom, the minute they achieve the goals you help them attain…something many don’t seem to understand.
tmedlin … hold on ole hoss. My intention was never to equate our troops with terrorists. My own son is a former Marine who served in Iraq. Read the article again. It doesn’t equate our troops as terrorists, either. Denouncing the USE of our troops is a far cry from denouncing the troops, themselves. When you re-read the article, pay closer attention to who is being criticized. It’s not our troops.
As for my being careful who I associate with, allow me to respond by saying that yes, I AM proudly anti-war. I’m not in favor of killing people and breaking things. That does not mean that I do not support JUST war. That does not mean that I am not willing to personally participate in such a war. War to defend our country against a foreign invasion is a just war. The wars we have fought during my lifetime, in my opinion and unfortunately for all who died and were maimed in them, are anything but just wars. They have been based on lies and committed in support of nefarious purposes.
Since Vietnam, we have been so conditioned to value our men and women in uniform, that we seem incapable of distinguishing between our support of their service and the illegal, immoral, and unconscionable missions our government often tasks them with.
Maybe the source of the article caused you some concern. Quite frankly, though, we Americans can gain a much clearer picture of what is actually going on in the world when we take advantage of the reporting from foreign sources like RT and Press TV, even the BBC. Surely we have come to realize that our domestic media rarely tells us the truth. That’s not to say we should accept anything from any source as the final word. That’s why being well read and learning the arts of discernment and critical thinking are so important for us all.
Finally, I have no beef with Islam, so long as they mind their own business and stay out of mine. If, however, the adherents of that faith attempt to conquer or colonize America, I refer you back to my position on just war. I will not argue that Islam, like all totalitarian world-views, does not by nature attempt to spread like a cancer and use force to do so. Nor will I argue that such a system is, in any way, compatible with our republican form of government.
All this being said, when our government uses our troops to illegally invade a foreign country and the ‘collateral damage’ results in blow-back, I don’t necessarily condemn the perpetrators of the blow-back as ‘terrorists’. We should recall that the Patriots of the American Revolution were so designated by the British but they will always and forever remain Patriots to us.
The point, here, is that we should never desert the moral high ground. Our government has come to do that on a very regular basis. I hope this clarification of my position in presenting the subject article satisfies your concerns. If not, we’ll just have to agree to disagree on this point and remain united where we can. Since you follow this site, I imagine that will be on more issues than not.
1st -- that would be MRS. ole hoss. 2nd -- I don’t care where your article comes from. Having said that, one must consider the source (Iranian press) and the writer, a leftist from FAIR. 3rd -- the article linked to states specifically that “we have” become the evil we deplore and this appears to be directed at our troops (as pictured), and not our government. 4th -- holding up Barbara Lee, a U.C. Berkely educated, far left representative coming from the “Bay area” of California, as the sole paragon of virtue, in an otherwise unvirtuous congress just doesn’t fly, with me. 5th -- as far as the GWOT, I would like it to be over, so that my kids never have to go to the Middle East again. However, simply declaring that we are NOT at war, will certainly not stop the terrorists who declared THEY were at war with us, a decade before we woke up.
I apologize for not ascertaining your gender from your ‘handle’. As to my source, I was aware from whence it came. It’s just that I don’t discount a point based on the source. Every once in a blue moon a liberal does have a good one; not often, but once in a while. We used to call that ‘a blind hog finding an acorn’ (lol). I hope you have a great weekend.
you, too!
Bob, you have nothing to apologize for here, on any of your points.
