Joseph Warren is shot in the head during the third wave of the British assault on Breed’s Hill (commonly mistaken as Bunker Hill). Some accounts, though disputed due to a lack of a primary source, say these are Joseph Warren’s last words: “It is sweet and fitting to die for your country.” God bless Joseph Warren and his sacrifice, arguably America’s most important forgotten Founding Father. Loyalist Peter Oliver in 1782, stated that had Warren survived Breed’s Hill George Washington would have been “an obscurity.” Historian Ethan Rafuse stated, “No man, with the possible exception of Samuel Adams, did so much to bring about the rise of a movement powerful enough to lead the people of Massachusetts [and eventually America] to revolution.”
