Tragedy of the Commons

During the Vietnam war, elicit drugs were place on the soldiers food
trays. They could take them or not.
Thus Solzhenitsyn’s over-quoted line might better have said,
“The line separating good and evil passes through every human heart, but a hostile state, class, or political party is still trying to destroy you.”

It’s my observation that it’s easier to control State and Federal prisons than County jails. The guards in prisons usually employ the service of two or three man goon squads to do their dirty work. For special privileges the goon squads will correct a prisoner who is giving the guards a hard time. The County jails usually have their special units like the cell extraction squads. Segregating the prisoners also helps keep the violence down a bit. Corruption, incompetence and employee criminal activity can be a real deal breaker, when it comes to control of a prison/jail.

I’ve wondered about exactly what SP1 brings up in the latter portion — what will prison authorities do in a social breakdown when food, electric power, even the corrections officers themselves stop coming?
The guards and the prisoners among themselves know who the “worst of the worst” are. The duty of the warden and the guards, under the given circumstances, is clear. Easy for me to say, knowing I’ll probably never be a warden or corrections officer.
