Checking with Grok

Even if the 38 Republican votes that were against the 116-page continuing resolution had switched to “yes,” the total number of votes in favor would have been:

  • Original votes in favor: 174
  • Additional votes from Republicans: 38

Total votes in favor would then be:

174 + 38 = 212

The resolution needed 273 votes to pass under the suspension of the rules, which requires a two-thirds supermajority. Thus, with 212 votes in favor, it still would not have passed.

A supermajority vote would have been a very remote possibility. It sure would be nice if our Republican side of the House would propose an actual balanced budget, just to give voters confidence they are actually willing and able to think in those terms.
