There are actually four phases of islamic conquest, as taught in the Hadiths --

Come as beggars, crawling on your knees;
Stand and deal as equals, contending with the unbeliever;
Kill as an army of allah, filling the streets with blood;
Reign like kings, allah’s appointed in victory over the infidel.
