mach 20…. maybe at extream altitude, as in space…. but, unless they have a newly found mystery material, speeds above mach 8-10 at lower altitudes generate enough heat from friction to melt the skin of the vehical.
that’s why orbital space craft have heat shields….which would increase the weight of a missel beyond flight limits.
“Mach Number” Speeds are only relevant In the Atmosphere -- in Space, at near-vacuum conditions, there is only Velocity relative to the Ground- you can read that as Miles/Kilometers per Second/Minute/Hour.
In the Atmosphere, “Mach Number” refers to the Ratio of Velocity to the Speed of Sound AT the Air Temperature, Density, and Humidity that the Vehicle is traveling in. Sound travels Fastest at Cold, Sea-Level Conditions — a Plane flying Mach 1 (Sonic) just above the Ocean is moving much Faster than the same Plane flying at 30,000 Feet.
The referenced “Avangard” Device is NOT a Powered Vehicle- the depiction is of a generic, “Hypersonic” Ramjet Missile. The Avangard is a Maneuverable Glider “Shell” for Nuclear or Conventional Bombs. It is Launched by a Ballistic Missile, just like any other Nuclear “Shell”, and Falls into the Atmosphere at a Velocity that counts as “Mach 20” or more as it descends to its Target. The extant Carbon/Ceramic Heat Shielding materials that common Ballistic Warheads use are perfectly adequate for an Avangard type system, but I rather suspect that Ivan has some better versions of that.
The “Sarmat” Missile is the largest War Rocket ever built -- 208 Metric Tons and capable of Launching 10 Ballistic Warheads, or an Undisclosed number of Avangard Gliders. It has the Range to be fired South out of Russia, over Antarctica, and up to the U.S. Gulf Coast- there’s no Radar there that can see it coming.
