Growing up in the hills of Virginia, I remember moonshine stills would be sought by the revenue agents. Once I remember hearing the rumor that one never made it out, guess he got lost…😉
And you don’t want to be a stranger on a country road in Kentucky either. My deceased wife grew up there and she could tell you stories.

Exactly…. and the folks from SW VA and East TN who mustered to fight at King’s Mtn. had to travel two weeks through the mountains to get to the fight!; scrounging food on their way to the fight. Then had to get back home, some wounded.
It’s full, ain’t got no more room. Stay away.

I had an uncle who lived in Galax, Va. He played a mighty mean fiddle, and he liked to pull a cork occasionally. He went home to be with the Lord some years back. I still miss him.
I always wanted to retire to the N.C. mountains but, unfortunately, my wife’s health problems prevented that. The mountains truly are “God’s country.”
Now THAT’S an authentic Appalachian response to newcomers!
