Gov. Cooper vetoes bill requiring sheriffs to cooperate with ICE detainers

House Bill 370, known as “An Act to Require Compliance with Immigration Detainers and Administrative Warrants,” passed 62-53 in the State House on Tuesday afternoon. The bill was then sent to Cooper for his signature.

Gov. Roy Cooper on Wednesday vetoed legislation that would have required sheriff’s office’s to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement when it comes to immigration detainers.

In a memo accompanying his veto, Cooper wrote, “As the former top law enforcement officer of our state, I know that current law allows the state to jail and prosecute dangerous criminals regardless of immigration status.”

While I believe that the Sheriff’s should respect the immigration laws. Let’s flip the coin over, say the old north state decided to confiscate your guns but your local Sheriff refuses. Should he be made to follow that law?
Your Sheriff is the only LEO that you have any control over. If they don’t follow the law or don’t represent your values you can vote them out, or even run your self.
It’s a law that could have come back to bite us in 10 or 20 years.
God save our State either way 🙏

Gun rights are protected by the constitution whereas people here illegally have no constitutional rights at all. That’s my understanding anyway.

True, but the whole part of “not infringed” has been pushed way past the limit already. SBRs are illegal, silencers are illegal, have to have a background check and waiting period to buy a pistol, have to have a “permit” to carry ETC
