Gun Group ‘Targets’ UNC President

A series of at least 60 radio spots targeting the University of North Carolina system and its president, Tom Ross, begin today in Raleigh, Greensboro and Asheville. The spots focus on UNC’s malfeasance in protecting students from sexual assault and other violent crime.

Ross and university representatives oppose House Bill 937, which would enable concealed handgun permit-holders to better defend themselves by keeping firearms in locked vehicles on college campuses, claiming it would hamper campus police in “protecting” UNC students.

How Ross and UNC “protect” students:

·       Just hours after NC State University officials testified against HB 937, a student was raped outside the NCSU Free Expression Tunnel. Another was robbed at knife point near Reynolds Coliseum 2 days later.

·       UNC Chapel Hill is under federal investigation for deliberately under-reporting campus sexual assaults as required by federal law. According to a complaint filed by former assistant dean of students Melissa Manning and 4 others, she was pressured by the UNC Counsel’s office to under-report sexual assaults.

·       Sources indicate that even with under-reporting, UNC Chapel Hill students suffered 35 sexual assaults in just 3 years — a rate 50.1% above the national average for college campuses. ·       A UNC Chapel Hill student is being threatened with expulsion for merely naming her rapist.

·       Elizabeth City State University chancellor Willie Gilchrist resigned recently amid an investigation into reports that ECSU failed to investigate 125 criminal complaints, including 18 sexual assaults, going back to 2007.

‘No money for UNC’

Coordinated with the radio campaign, GRNC will today send email alerts to its 60,000+ North Carolina subscribers advising them to contact the UNC Board of Governors, alumni associations and others to deliver the message that as long as UNC opposes HB 937, under which concealed handgun permit-holders could better protect themselves on campuses where college officials clearly can’t protect them, they will withhold financial support from UNC institutions.
