And if Ebola doesn’t seem scary enough, there is now a rapidly growing outbreak of MERS-CoV (Middle East Repiratory Syndrome)Coronavirus in Saudi Arabia and several surrounding countries. The annual Hajj is in October this year, and several million muslim pilgrims will be flocking to Mecca beginning in mid September to partake. Unless this outbreak is contained before then, which seems unlikely, those pilgrims may be bringing back MERS as a souvenir of their visit. The present Fatality rate for MERS cases is about 35%. To put that in perspective, the “Swine Flu” epidemic yielded a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of less than 1%, yet the Swine Flu garnered a much more aggressive response from CDC, WHO, and other health agencies than MERS or Ebola are presently receiving. It leads one to wonder if there is an agenda at work, limiting the response.
