Is Nationalism a ‘Betrayal of Patriotism’?

Image result for macron

The President of France made the following statement:

“Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism. Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism. By saying our interests first… we erase what a nation holds dearest, what gives it life, what gives it grace, and what is essential: its moral values.”

Compare this to what Thomas Paine wrote:

“What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as freedom should not be highly rated.”

I would classify Thomas Paine as a patriot. As he fought for and inspired a revolution to have a free nation, I doubt that he would agree with Macron’s statement. However, the point is not what was said to belittle our President in front of the world. The point is that people in this country do not realize what is at risk and the consequences of our apathy. The other side has successfully manipulated half of the nation to support Socialism which always leads to Communism. If I had to wager which side will win, I would put my money on the Communists. They believe in their dogma more than “patriots”.
