RALEIGH, NC, March 19, 2012 — As Occupy Raleigh nears the six-month mark since its founding, activists continue their quest to right the ills of corrupted government and corporate greed through ongoing people’s assemblies and direct actions. On Sunday, March 25, Occupy Raleigh will respond to the Walking Occupation’s (Walkupy’s) “Greensboro Call” to “Occupy the Highways and March to Your Statehouse.”
Anticipating visitors from other parts of North Carolina, the demonstrators will gather at Raleigh’s Fletcher Park at 11am, then march down Glenwood Ave. and on to the NC Legislature (16 W. Jones St.). There they will rally to hold politicians accountable, call for an end to institutionalized corporate control of government, and demand that the people’s interests be served. March 25 (#M25) is a national day of action; people in every state will rally at their Statehouse on this day. The Raleigh event schedule is:
- 11:00am – 1:00pm – Meet at Fletcher Park (802 Clay St., Raleigh) for a bring-your-own picnic, socializing and soap-boxing.
- 1:00pm – 2:00pm – March from Fletcher Park down Glenwood Ave. to the NC Legislature (approx. 1.4 mi. For a free return trip to your car, jump on the R-Line near the State Capitol and ride to West St.)
- 2:00pm – 4:00pm – Rally to Restore Voter Sovereignty before the NC Legislature
One needn’t look far to understand what demonstrators mean when they say: “We bear witness to the corruption of our democratic processes that has become business as usual in our state.” The Jan. 5 midnight veto-override session (led by Speaker Thom Tillis) is a prime example of the Legislature covertly working to undermine the best interests of the people. Tillis was named “Legislator of the Year” by the partisan, anti-democratic American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).
Furthermore, local mogul Art Pope (of the Civitas Institute and Americans for Prosperity) used his wealth and connections to win influence over 18 state legislative races in 2010, exploiting that year’s U.S. Supreme Court Citizen United decision allowing unlimited spending on elections. Other recent news symptomatic of systemic corruption involves former governor Mike Easley and Representative Stephen LaRoque.
