You mentioned ‘aircraft carriers being sitting ducks’ --no one realizes the effects of a hypersonic missile hitting one one of these modern-day missile sponges. First off our military is not able to counter these weapons (because they weave and dodge and expend countermeasures on their way in) making all of our current day AAA weapons useless. Second… the hypersonic weapons come in so fast that there is little to no reaction time as most of the flight time is undetectable--as the weapons push a plasma mock wave ahead, blocking all spectrums of electromagnetic detections.

Finally these weapons are precision weapons--and a direct strike upon a large target such as a missile-sponge (aircraft carrier) is virtually assured. Imagine what a point-blank 12gauge, 00 buck shotgun blast to a watermelon would look like. This would be the effect, even without any type of explosive warhead upon any missile-sponge. The ship would go down instantly like the HMS Hood in WWII--with nearly all hands.

Some months ago a deep Ukrainian command bunker was zotzed (to the depth of 400 feet) by a hypersonic weapon, killing several hundred NATO and Ukrainian officers and personnel. I believe they’re still digging them out to this day.

ALL of Russia’s hypersonic weapons can carry both conventional and nuclear payloads. Even a close detonation with a nuclear payload would render a missile-sponge useless--as seen with the test ships in the Bikini atomic tests back in the day. Imagine losing the bulk of an entire aircraft carrier battle group to one weapon. Billions upon billions of dollars of shipping and men lost in a single strike.
