Once again, Johnston County Commissioners infringe …

Grassroots North Carolina just issued the following ALERT:

On Monday, August 6th, the Johnston County Board of Commissioners silently adopted over-reaching new noise ordinances designed to, among other things, silence virtually all gunfire within the County. The only exemptions allowed for under the new proposals are for hunting, self-defense, and the odd circumstances “pursuant to lawful directions of law-enforcement officers”. With only these exemptions in place, virtually all other forms of gunfire could subject you to a Class III misdemeanor charge under the new laws!

Despite reaching a reasonable agreement last year between the County and residents and forming a policy based on mutual respect, the Johnston County Board of Commissioners this time swept away this agreement and voted unanimously to adopt the new laws without your input! Only random chance prevented these new proposals from becoming law in August, which was due to one of the Commissioners not being present to vote. Due to state law, the proposals now require a second vote with all Commissioners being present.

 Last chance to be heard!

The second vote is scheduled for at the next Board of Commissioners meeting on September 4th at 6:00pm. If the proposal receives a majority vote, it will then become the law of the land in Johnston County. This is your one chance to attend the meeting and have your voice heard! All concerned residents of Johnston County should attend the meeting in order to insure that your rights are not discarded by the Board of Commissioners.

In his respectful fashion, Paul Valone has requested a polite communication to the County Commissioners.  We tried that last year.  See how well that worked?

We are well beyond speaking politely to political power.  The following email addresses are the people who need to hear from you.  The message I sent is appended below.

“No Misguided Noise Ordinance” … an alternate solution to Johnston County noise problems

Ladies and Gentlemen:

With regard to your desire to pass restrictions on use of firearms on private property at the Board of Commissioners’ meeting on 6 September.

Since you are so concerned with unwanted noise in Johnston County, I suggest you budget sufficient funds to distribute one copy of this book, and a voucher for materials, to each household in the county:

How to Build Practical Firearm Suppressors

Another effective way to reduce unnecessary County noise levels would be for you to stop talking.

I would encourage all of you to carefully reconsider your direction on the Sept 4, 2012 concerning banning all outside shooting except during hunting season or self defense. Examine the Sheriff’s call records relative to noise complaints and you will find that you are trying to institute a global ordinance that addresses the exception rather than the rule. You never make ordinances/policy based on exceptions!!

Think about the rural communities in Johnston County and all the farmers and farm land and now you going to tell a farmer who owns and farms hundreds and thousands of acres that he/she cannot discharge a firearm except during hunting season or self defense. This is a ludicrous mindset!

At a minimum, this ordinance is so far reaching that your voters should decide the issue not a minority group county of commissioners.

@Ivan

I believe you are well meaning, but you are missing the point of the problem in Johnston County.

The proposed restriction is either

(1) part of the liberal agenda to ban use of firearms that they cannot yet prohibit, or

(2) it is collusion between firing-range owners and the local government to drive business to the “approved” ranges.

Keep your ears and eyes wide open …
