Our sermon in church today was 1 Peter 2:13.

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right.

The pastor explained how the government is put in control by God and “therefore” we must submit and obey. Like ALL sermons that I have listened to, there is no discussion. The congregation must submit to the pastor, reverend or minister. I will admit that I went to get up halfway through the sermon but my wife restrained me. I endured the rest of the sermon and left. Looking back, I should not have expected anything less. Our churches submit to the government’s policies on abortion (murder), homosexuality, immorality, gay marriage and its attack on Christianity.

If we are to submit to “government”, how does the church justify the United States? This country was founded on a revolution against the king of England. Should we submit to a government founded on an act against God? The English did not call our war the American Revolution. They called it the Presbyterian Revolt because the church was in the forefront of our fight for freedom with a firm reliance on divine Providence.

I know that war is coming. I know that God will guide my actions with Sacred honor. I also know that most of our churches have become little more than cowardly institutions supporting evil as in Nazi Germany. Matthew 4 was not considered in this lecture:

⁸ Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

⁹ And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

¹⁰ Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Nor Ephesians 6:110-14:

¹⁰ Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

¹¹ Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

¹² For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

¹³ Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

¹⁴ Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

Nor Luke 22:36:

He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.

Why would Jesus tell his apostles to buy a sword if we are to submit? Are we to submit to ISIS as they decapitate priests for praying? I will defend my family and friends against tyranny and evil. I pray that our “churches” find discernment in the Word and not in mistranslations.

Submit to Government? (1 Peter 2)

It was Peter who uttered the words, “We must obey God rather than men!“¹ to the Sanhedrin. Does he later tell us, in 1 Peter 2:13, to submit to secular governing authorities rather than God?

Read these two versions of the text.

The first version seems to suggest we should submit to every human institution, while the second, an 1899 version, reads as though he is admonishing us to be submissive to every human creature alike and show them honour for God’’s sake. What was Peter saying and to whom?

A crucial distinction made in Islamic theology is that between dar al-harb and dar al-islam. To put it simply, dar al-harb (territory of war or chaos) is the name for the regions where Islam does not dominate, where divine will is not observed, and therefore where continuing strife is the norm. By contrast, dar al-islam (territory of peace) is the name for those territories where Islam does dominate, where submission to God is observed, and where peace and tranquility reign.

The distinction is not quite as simple as it may at first appear. For one thing, the division is regarded as legal rather than theological. Dar al-harb is not separated from dar al-islam by things like the popularity of Islam or divine grace; rather, it is separated by the nature of the governments which have control over a territory. A Muslim-majority nation not ruled by Islamic law is still dar al-harb, while a Muslim-minority nation ruled by Islamic law could qualify as being part of dar al-islam.

Wherever Muslims are in charge and enforce Islamic law, there is also dar al-islam. It doesn’t matter so much what people believe or have faith in, what matters is how people behave. Islam is a religion focused more upon proper conduct (orthopraxy) than on proper beliefs and faith (orthodoxy). Islam is also a religion that has never had an ideological or theoretical place for a separation between the political and the religious spheres: in orthodox Islam, the two are fundamentally and necessarily linked. That’s why this division between dar al-harb and dar al-islam is defined by political control rather than religious popularity.

The global stock market rally since mid-February has allowed stocks to recover at a blistering pace, or so it seems. And you’d think from all the hype that the bear-market episode is behind us.

By Friday afternoon, the Dow was just 4.6% below its all-time high, set a year ago, and the S&P 500 only 3.9%. On Friday, the S&P 500 edged back into the green year-to-date, while the Dow remains in the red. The Nasdaq is still down 8.8% from its high a year ago. But those were the cleanest dirty shirts of the major global indices.

So, now that we’re relieved the whiff of panic has blown over, it’s time to have a look again at our Bear Market Tracker, lest we think all is well in the world of equities.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (S.C.) endorsed Donald Trump Friday.

Gowdy, who previously endorsed Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), made the announcement on MSNBC.

“My guy lost. When the jury speaks, I’m going to support the jury,” he said.

I hope @TGowdySC does better for Rubio than he did at the #Benghazi hearings, which were a total disaster for Republicans & America!

In the first quarter, South Korean shipbuilders saw their orders collapse by 94.1% to 170,000 compensated gross tons (CGT), compared to the prior year. In terms of dollars, orders collapsed 94% from $6.5 billion in Q1 2015 to just $390 million.

Global orders for new vessels in Q1 have collapsed too, but slightly less, according to the Export-Import Bank of Korea, cited by IHS Fairplay: down 71% year-over-year to 2.32 CGT.

“Their business slump may continue throughout this year, and demand for oil tankers may improve slightly during the second half of the year,” Korea Eximbank said in the report. Current order backlog will provide work for about two years. For all of 2016, orders are expected to plunge by 85%, from $23.7 billion in 2015 to just $3.5 billion.

Chinese shipyards are in even deeper trouble.

In May so far, three shipyards went bankrupt and began liquidation: Zhong Chuan Heavy Industry, Zhong Chuan Heavy Industry Equipment, and Zhoushan Xuhua Metal Material.

The non-voter is often castigated as “lazy” or “uncaring.” That might be true of some. For many, it’s the product of a rational calculation: nothing changes, so why vote? Yet now and again, a non-voter is stirred off his sofa by the appearance of a candidate, or a party platform, that alters that calculation and gives him hope. More often than not, the stimulus is the non-voter’s discovery of a minor party that differs substantially from the major ones.

There have been many minor parties. For a sample, we have the Populists, the Socialists, the Communists, the Conservatives, the Right-To-Lifers, the Constitutionalists – I borrowed them for a novel — the Consumers, and of course the Libertarians. None of these get a lot of votes per election, but they do get some – and oftentimes their tally is larger than the margin of victory.

That can make a major party candidate very angry…especially if the Republican lost the election, and the Libertarian candidate pulled enough votes to make the difference.

Republican Party candidates have often complained bitterly about such results. They seem to think the GOP candidate has a right to those votes; they act as if the votes that went to the Libertarian were “stolen” from them. They seldom ponder the possibility that he might have to earn them. They seldom pause to wonder whether the only reason those votes were cast at all is that the voters deemed the LP candidate worth the trip to the polling place — that those voters might have stayed home were he not on the ballot.

Entitlement – the belief that one inherently deserves privileges or special treatment. When considering this definition – one can almost see Hillary Clinton’s photo under the description. And considering she has chosen to endure husband Bill’s philandering for many years – perhaps she is entitled to something – but, the presidency of the United States???

When the Clintons departed the White House Hillary felt entitled to whatever furnishings and artifacts she wanted to take with her – about $190,000.00 worth in fact. When confronted – Hillary returned some $28,000.00 worth of items to the National Park Service and paid for $86,000.00 worth of items – that still leaves about $75,000.00 worth of items which have never been returned or paid for.

Skipping over years of conniving, lying, and manipulating the system to serve her own desires – we will now turn to her decision to have a private email server installed in her personal residence. The logic of the private server and her decision to delete around thirty thousand emails was no doubt prompted by an effort to hide the inner workings of the Clinton Foundation – the comingling of private financial enterprise with government information is a violation of federal statutes – thus the emails concerning the foundation were no doubt deleted. Deleting (scrubbing) documents has been a successful way to hide Hillary Clinton’s wrongdoing for decades. Continue reading →

Despite the denials, the stories about Facebook’s bias are real. But the bias isn’t there because of the company’s new technology. Facebook is biased because of its reliance on the biased old media.

Facebook’s trending topics wasn’t the automatic system that the company wanted people to think it was. Instead it hired young journalists with new media experience to “curate” its news feed. And plenty of them proved to be biased against conservative news and sources. Meanwhile someone at the top of Facebook’s dysfunctional culture wanted to play up Syria and the Black Lives Matter hate group.

Mark Zuckerberg’s fundamental mistake was recreating the biases and agendas of the old media in a service whose whole reason for existing was to allow users to create their own experience. The big difference between social and search is that social media is supposed to let you be the curator.

But, like Facebook’s trending topics, social curation was another scam. Facebook users don’t really define what they see. It’s defined for them by the company’s agendas. This includes the purely financial. It would be foolish to think that the fortunes that Buzzfeed spends on Facebook advertising don’t impact the placement of its stories by Facebook’s mysterious algorithm. And there is the more complex intersection of politics and branding in an age when business relevance means social relevance.

Perhaps the real issue is not Facebook but the concept of social media. Get off the computer and interact with real people. Read a book. Build something. Learn something. Exercise.
