Many investors today are not very familiar with market history and tend to live only in the day-to-day mainstream narrative while watching little red and green graphs move up and down. This is not so much an issue in a relatively stable economic environment. The problem is, today we live in the most unstable economic conditions possible.

These investors and analysts are simply not aware that some of the most exciting stock rallies occur during the most volatile crises, and so they interpret every rally of a few days to a few weeks as a signal for recovery.  However, in this kind of fiscal environment, all the gains made in a few weeks can be lost in moments.

After the Great Depression began to take hold in U.S. markets, massive rallies unfolded over the span of weeks and sometimes months, only to end in a collapse to even lower depths. For example, in 1930 the Dow Jones enjoyed historic rallies twice, gaining 48% only to lose it all, then gaining more than 16% and crashing down to a 50% loss for the year. Each consecutive year there were multiple rallies of more than 25% and each time they disintegrated. By 1932 stocks were only worth approximately 20% of what they were worth in 1929. Bear market rallies continued to give false hope to investors and the public throughout the crisis, and mainstream banks and economists continued to exploit such rallies to capitalize on those false hopes.

N.C. Republican Party Chairman Hasan Harnett said Tuesday that his party email account was shut off by executive director Dallas Woodhouse – a dispute that highlights major strife between the two leaders just days before the primary.

Woodhouse said Tuesday that the email accounts were shut off Monday to address a “security issue,” but he said he hadn’t reached out to Harnett letting him know of the problem.

Harnett sent Woodhouse a scathing email accusing him of trying to undermine the party’s elected leadership. The email was posted by The Daily Haymaker, a conservative blog. Harnett confirmed by phone that the email is authentic but declined to comment further.

We just got more evidence that global trade is absolutely imploding.  Chinese exports dropped 25.4 percent during the month of February compared to a year ago, and Chinese imports fell 13.8 percent compared to a year ago.  For Chinese exports, that was the worst decline that we have seen since 2009, and Chinese imports have now fallen for 16 months in a row on a year over year basis.  The last time we saw numbers like this, we were in the depths of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s.  China accounts for more global trade than any other nation (including the United States), and so this is a major red flag.  Anyone that is saying that the global economy is in “good shape” is clearly not paying attention.

If someone would have told me a year ago that Chinese exports would be 25 percent lower next February, I would not have believed it.  This is not just a slowdown – this is a historic implosion.

Debt represents moral issues that transcend its economic role. The heart of debt is a promise: to pay the agreed upon interest and repay the principle at an agreed upon date in the future. The name of one class of debt—bonds— carries an unmistakable moral connotation: one’s word is one’s bond. Creditors must assess character—the willingness to repay—before they evaluate borrowers’ incomes, assets, and future prospects—the ability to repay. That formulation looks quaintly anachronistic, which tells you all you need to know about contemporary morality. As debt has become the centerpiece of global economics, so too has it become emblematic of global ethics, or more properly, their absence.

In 1913, a perceptive few recognized the political and economic dimensions of the new income tax and central banking legislation; fewer still recognized the philosophical and moral implications. Under a real money standard (money defined as: a medium of exchange, a store of value, and a unit of account, with intrinsic value, and not a liability of an individual or entity, e.g., a gold standard), the creation of debt hinges on the supply of real money and its value relative to goods and services. So limited, most debt will be incurred for productive uses that have a prospective return greater than the cost of debt service.

When governments and central banks are not so limited, they can create fiat debt at will. In 1971, President Nixon completed the transition begun in 1913 away from the convertibility of dollars for gold. Since then, the dollar has been a fiat debt unit. The government and the Federal Reserve can produce an unlimited amount of fiat debt units, not just Federal Reserve Notes, but member banks’ reserve balances at the Fed, and Treasury bills, notes, and bonds.

FREEMANSPERSPECTIVE

Any student of history learns that people will put up with horrific government abuse before they do anything about it. And so I’ve been watching for years, waiting to see how much abuse the Western world, and Americans in particular, will accept from government before they admit that they’re being abused.

In dark moments, I’ve even wondered whether this time was different, whether the natural human reaction against pain had somehow been eliminated. People in the past have rebelled against far less.

But I’ve also come to understand we have, in our times, a unique driver of compliance. By that, I refer to the most sacred of our public idols, “democracy.”

Notwithstanding that no modern government is actually a democracy, ‘“democracy’” has proven to be the greatest cloak for government sins in all of human history. After all, if the government is everybody, there’s really no one to blame. That’s plainly a scam, of course, but lots of people have bought into it… and after they’ve mouthed their worship to “democracy” a few times, they can be counted on to defend it.

Still, there must be some limit to the abuse Americans are willing to take. The problem is that it hasn’t shown up yet. And if you think of how desperately Americans are abused by their government, it’s a bit stunning. Here’s a short list of abuses:

• A currency regime that allows private banks to skim from every dollar as it’s created.
• The indenture of newborn children to unpayable debts, thanks to “democracy” and politicians.
• Permanent, massive, and “legal” systems of open political bribery.
• Forced subservience to laws that have been purchased (and often written) by private businesses.
• More laws than any person, including lawyers, can remember or even understand.
• Endless wars and several permanent, standing armies.
• Continuous and universal surveillance of nearly all correspondence, including telephone conversations, Internet use, and the electronic transmission of documents.
• Warrantless invasions and searches of autos, businesses, and even private homes.
• A militarized (and publicly worshiped) police enforcer class… who are trained to lie and intimidate people.
• Tens of thousands of intensely violent SWAT raids every year.
• Outright (and massive) stealing by police departments, under the guise of “guilty property,” rather than guilty people.
• Millions of people jailed for nonviolent, victimless crimes.
• A combined tax rate of more than 50%.
• Child Service bureaus that are empowered to steal children from parents and then absolved of blame for the thousands of children who are abused in their custody.

I could go on, but I think the point is made: Americans are getting the crap kicked out of them on a continual basis. And not only that, but the people abusing them expect to be thanked for it.

I watch in wonder.

We’ve just learned that Barack Obama has “just said no” to attending the funeral of former First Lady Nancy Reagan, so he can instead attend the SXSW media festival in Austin, Texas (city motto: “The Liberal Cancer in the Lone Star State”).

“If I didn’t attend a funeral for a sitting Supreme Court Justice, I sure as hell won’t be wasting my time going to one for an old first lady,” the president may well have said. “Give me a break, there’s nothing less important than a first lady!”
