Stocks Slump Across Europe and Asia Following Shanghai’s 7% Crash

Financial markets are starting 2016 on a bleak note and China is at the center of it.

Stocks crumbled around the world, with emerging markets falling the most since August, as slowing manufacturing triggered a selloff that halted equity trading in Shanghai. Asian currencies weakened with metals and credit markets, while bonds jumped and the yen rallied on demand for haven assets. Brent crude traded higher, rising as much as 3.3 percent after Saudi Arabia and Bahrain cut ties with Iran.

Montel Williams: SHOOT TO KILL Oregon Protesters

MontelWilliams

Montel Williams is calling for the National Guard to storm the militia members held up in a vacant wilderness building on “shoot to kill orders.”

The talk show host turned prescription drug pitchman–who amazingly has 160,000 Twitter followers–posted a message late Saturday night to his “fans” in response to someone who said the protesters are looking to get attention:

What Is Coming In 2016

2015 2016 - Public Domain

A lot of people were expecting some really big things to happen in 2015, and most of them did not happen.  But what did happen?  It is my contention that a global financial crisis began during the second half of 2015, and it threatens to greatly accelerate as we enter 2016.  During the last six months of the year that just ended, financial markets all over the planet crashed, trillions of dollars of global wealth was wiped out, and some of the largest economies in the world plunged into recession.  Here in the United States, 2015 was the worst year for stocks since 2008, nearly 70 percent of all investors lost money last year, and it is being projected that the final numbers will show that close to 1,000 hedge funds permanently shut down within the last 12 months.  This is what the early stages of a financial crisis look like, and the worst is yet to come.

If we were entering another 2008-style crisis, we would expect to see junk bonds crashing.  When financial trouble starts, it usually doesn’t start with the biggest and strongest companies.  Instead, it usually starts percolating on the periphery.  And right now bonds of firms that are considered to be on the risky side of things are rapidly losing value.

In the chart below, you can see that a high yield bond ETF that I track very closely known as JNK started crashing in the middle of 2008.  This crash began to unfold before the horrific crash of stocks in the fall.  Investors that saw junk bonds crashing in advance and pulled their money out of stocks in time saved an enormous amount of money.

Now, for the very first time since the last financial crisis, we are seeing junk bonds crash again.  In December, there was finally a sustained crash through the psychologically-important 35.00 level, and at this point JNK is sitting a bit below 34.00.  This stunning decline is a giant red flag that tells us that stocks will soon follow in the exact same direction…

IT’S GETTING REAL: FULLY ARMED FBI AGENTS EN ROUTE TO OREGON FEDERAL BUILDING

fbi-suv

UPDATE 8:42 PM EST Sunday 1-3-16 — NATIONAL GUARD ACTIVATED; FBI enroute to confront militia at night.

Heavily armed and well-equipped federal agents have arrived in Oregon from various parts of the U.S. to gain tactical advantage over the armed patriot group who commandeered a federal building Saturday, by responding swiftly and with force if necessary.

Additionally, political figures have been placed under an unofficial public gag order and were instructed to not talk about the situation. So far major mainstream coverage of the event has been limited.

Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward issued a statement on Saturday which said:

These men came to Harney County claiming to be part of militia groups supporting local ranchers, when in reality these men had alternative motives to attempt to over throw the county and federal government in hopes to spark a movement across the United States.

Sheriff Ward claims a small group of people wants to overthrow the federal government. But the “militia” claim that they want to restore the Constitution which is the highest law in the land for the government that they are supposedly trying to overthrow. Who do you believe?

Mark Kelly: ‘Middle-Aged White Men’ with Decreased Life Expectancy Cling to Guns

Mark Kelly
During the January 3 airing of Meet the Press, gun control proponent Mark Kelly said “middle-aged white men” with decreased life expectancy are clinging to guns.

He also described ardent gun owners and gun rights supporters as residents of “middle America” who “make less money than they used to,” and therefore fear that everything is slipping away.

Kelly’s comments came after host Chuck Todd talked about the difference between “the gun culture in rural America” and the way guns are viewed by those in the northeast, who are more accepting of big government and accustomed to a police officer on every street corner.

Islamic State Execute ‘Five British Spies’ in Warning to David Cameron

islamic State

An apparently British jihadist has appeared in an Islamic State propaganda video executing five of his fellow countrymen, accusing them of spying on the Caliphate.

The new video shows the unidentified man, who speaks with a British accent, threatening UK Prime Minister David Cameron before killing his hostages, reports The Independent.

Addressed as a “message to David Cameron”, who the narrator calls an “imbecile” “arrogant and foolish”, and “slave of the White House”, five men in the customary orange jumpsuits now so strongly associated with execution in the Islamic State kneeling. Remarking the men have been “abandoned” to their fate by the British government, the men speak confessions to being spies before being shot in the head.

Planning for Armageddon

nuclear weapons

The 39th and final B-52G Stratofortress, tail number 58-0224, accountable under the New START Treaty with Russia in Tucson, Ariz. / AP

As the media and politicians in the United States are currently focusing most national security discussions on the Islamic State and the broader threat of terrorism, there is little public focus on other, arguably more consequential challenges for American foreign and defense policy. Interestingly, one of these challenges often ignored is the only tool capable of achieving the apocalyptic vision that ISIS so violently seeks: Nuclear weapons.

American nuclear policy and strategy has largely been marginalized since the end of the Cold War, regarded as a relic from another time. Brad Roberts thinks otherwise, however, and articulates in his new and important book The Case for U.S. Nuclear Weapons in the 21st Century why nuclear weapons are still essential to America’s security and interests, as well as to global stability.

Having served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for nuclear and missile defense policy from 2009 to 2013, Roberts has unique insight into how the United States utilizes its nuclear deterrent and, just as importantly, how America’s adversaries use their nuclear arsenals to further their interests.

The main argument of the book is that nuclear weapons still play a crucial and necessary role for U.S. strategic policy, and thus, Washington should not take any unilateral steps to reduce its nuclear arsenal beyond the levels set by the 2010 New START Treaty with Russia. This is mainly because the United States “is apparently alone among the states with nuclear weapons to believe that it has more nuclear weapons than it needs.” Roberts advocates for a balanced approach to nuclear strategy in which the United States utilizes political and legal means like arms control and nonproliferation to mitigate threats as it simultaneously uses military means to keep a strong nuclear deterrent while nuclear weapons exist.
