Through the last decades, as we have been getting ever more occupied trying to be what society tells us is defined as successful, we all missed out on a lot of changes in our world. Or perhaps we should be gentle to ourselves and say we’re simply slow to catch up.

Which is somewhat curious since we’ve also been getting bombarded with fast increasing amounts of what we’re told is information, so you’d think it might have become easier to keep up. It was not.

While we were busy being busy we for instance were largely oblivious to the fact the US is no longer a beneficial force in the world, and that it doesn’t spread democracy or freedom. Now you may argue to what extent that has ever been true, and you should, but the perception was arguably much closer to the truth 70 years ago, at the end of WWII, then it is today.

Another change we really can’t get our heads around is how the media have turned from a source of information to a source of – pre-fabricated – narratives. We’ll all say to some extent or another that we know our press feeds us propaganda, but, again arguably, few of us are capable of pinpointing to what extent that is true. Perhaps no big surprise given the overdose of what passes for information, but duly noted.

So far so good, you’re not as smart as you think. Bummer. But still an easy one to deny in the private space of your own head. If you get undressed and stand in front of the mirror, though, maybe not as easy.

When we think about Islam, one of the first things that we think of is terrorism.  There may be other things that come to mind, but usually that is the first.  It is hard not to think in such a way with ISIS and Hamas dominating the Mainstream news.  Well, there is a group of Muslims in Charlotte NC that is trying to change that perception.

Fox 46 reports:

The Quran Mobile is rolling around Charlotte and Muslims hope it educates people about their faith.

Concerned about the public’s perception of Islam after radical Islamic terrorists like ISIS have dominated the news cycle, Charlotte Muslims with the American Islamic Outreach Center wanted to take action.

The group, American Islamic Outreach Center is a part of the foundation by the same name.  Their main headquarters are in Franklin NC.  This group has been quietly active in the Charlotte area.  Working with Habitat for Humanity, distributing food to the needy, partnering with a Hindu group, and many other efforts.  Now the Outreach Center wishes to reach more people through the Mobile Quran.

In today’s Seattle IPC class, we talked a little bit about community security and legitimacy; specifically the battle for it.  In any power vacuum, whether it’s caused by a catastrophic event or some other collapse scenario, we may end up being locked into a battle over who our communities look to for guidance.

A just government derives its power from the consent of the governed.  Without that consent, especially on a local or regional level, the government becomes illegitimate in the eyes of the people.  (Which is why withdrawing consent is such a powerful tool in our non-violent arsenal.)  And once a government becomes illegitimate, there will be powers who seek to fill that gap.  One of the greatest threats to our communities and regions, then, is that the good guys fail to shore up support for Rightful Liberty and you end up trading one tyranny for another.

Providing security and stability, along with empowering citizens to defend their natural rights, should be our top priority.  Without legitimacy — if our neighbors and regional peers don’t see our efforts as legitimate — then those efforts will be short-lived.  The populace will give their consent to someone else and we’ll wind up back in the same position we’re in now.

Credibility is a key part of legitimacy.  To many of us, fewer and fewer in government remain credible.  We elect Congress to overturn or defund Obamacare and many of them end up supporting it.  Same with amnesty; same with net neutrality; same with just about everything it seems.  Corruption also kills credibility.  Congressional approval is at all-time lows for a reason: many of them are nothing but crooks.  So if we’re to have a legitimate regional government, we have to enforce corruption laws.  There must be real and severe penalties for our leaders breaking the law; I would say they need to be much, much stiffer for elected leaders than for the average citizen.  Right now, it’s about the exact opposite.

Legitimacy, in most ways, is more about soft power than hard power.  It’s more about our ability to influence than coerce.  Hearts and minds isn’t about how many people we can kill, but about how many people we can save; to how many people we can bring security and stability.  The ironic thing is that folks who don’t understand hearts and minds are going to try to win the populace through hard power, which is actually going to end up alienating them.  They’re going to lose legitimacy, just as the police are right now, because they’re more interested in exercising their spears than their brains.

At first, last week’s shooting in a Boston parking lot of a man wielding a knife sounded as though it would become another story of the police overreacting. On Friday federal authorities in Boston said the dead man was the ringleader of a plot to behead American citizens or kill Massachusetts cops, in solidarity with Islamic State. The risk of “lone-wolf” terror attacks in the U.S. continues.

Federal prosecutors in Boston also arrested two other men and charged them with helping the dead assailant, Usaamah Abdullah Rahim. The authorities said that Nicholas Rovinski, who calls himself Nuh Amriki, and David Wright, known as Dawud Sharif Abdul Khaliq, intended to behead Pamela Geller, who staged a Mohammed cartoon show in Texas. The plans changed when Rahim decided instead to go after the police.

It is certainly disturbing to learn that some Americans can be transformed into agents of murder for Islamic State. How that is happening was the subject of a hearing June 3 in the U.S. House of Representatives. Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, took testimony on how the Web and social media are being used by terror groups to recruit and brainwash accomplices inside the U.S.

First, from the UN News Centre refugees are streaming into the Western Balkans (emphasis below is mine):

12 June 2015 – Southern Europe’s migrant and refugee crisis has reached the Western Balkans where an increasing number of asylum-seekers are using the region’s migration routes to flee their home countries, the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) has confirmed.

Addressing a press conference in Geneva earlier today, UNHCR spokesperson Adrian Edwards told reporters of a dramatic uptick in the number of men, women and children using the so-called ‘Western Balkans route’ as they seek to reach Western Europe. Many are also registering for asylum in the Western Balkans – a region which has seen a four-fold increase in the number of asylum-seekers since 2012. In 2015, Mr. Edwards added, Serbia alone has seen over 22,000 asylum claims lodged in the first four months of the year.
