When it comes to the Ukraine proxy war, which started in earnest just about one year ago with the violent coup that overthrew then president Yanukovich and replaced him with a local pro-US oligarch, there has been no ambiguity who the key actors were: on the left, we had the west, personified by the US, the European Union, and NATO in general; while on the right we had Russia. In fact, if there was any confusion, it was about the role of that other “elephant in the room” – China.

To be sure, a question few asked throughout the Ukraine civil war is just whose side is China leaning toward. After all the precarious balance of power between NATO and Russia had resulted in a stalemate in which neither side has an obvious advantage (even as the Ukraine economy died, and its currency hyperinflated, waiting for a clear winner), and the explicit or implicit support of China to either camp would make all the difference in the world, not to mention the world’s most formidable axis.

Good news! Our optimistic host, Andrew Klavan, takes a look at President Obama’s belief that no religion is responsible for terrorism. Sure, everywhere you look now days savages screaming Allahu Akbar are raping, murdering, decapitating and burning innocents, but hey, Christians did something bad way back a long time ago too!

Facebook has given another thumbs up to social progression with the introduction of a custom gender option for all Facebook US English users worldwide.

Now, rather than being restricted to female or male, users can enter just about whatever they like into a custom field – whether it’s transgender, transexual or lumbersexual – and customise who gets to see that information.

The change expands upon the social network’s introduction last year of more than 50 gender options for its US users to choose from in a drop-down list.

The Senate Judiciary Committee cleared Loretta Lynch on Thursday to be the next attorney general, virtually guaranteeing she will be confirmed in the full Senate next month, even as Democrats intimated that Republicans who opposed her were guilty of racism.

Ms. Lynch, an African-American and U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, has won widespread praise for her work as a prosecutor — but has suffered by comparisons to current Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. and because she declined to distance herself from President Obama’s claims of unilateral executive powers, which have angered Republican lawmakers.

“The senate cannot confirm someone to this post who’s going to support and advance a scheme that violates our Constitution,” said Sen. Jeff Sessions, Alabama Republican, who said the vote was part of “a constitutional tipping point.”

Democrats also saw the vote as just, though said it was a major test of how far the country had come on the issue of race since its founding.
