Russia Rejects Ukraine’s Gas Deal; 2am Eastern Deadline Looms

As suspected given the huge distance between the bid and offer, the EU-brokered Ukraine-Russia gas deal has failed:

  • GAZPROM CEO MILLER LEAVES SITE OF UKRAINE GAS TALKS
  • GAZPROM SAYS TALKS ENDED, DEADLINE WON’T CHANGE (negotiate that!)
  • RUSSIA REJECTED EU’S GAS PROPOSAL: OETTINGER
  • UKRAINE WAS READY TO ACCEPT EU PROPOSAL ($300-$385): PRODAN (lol!!)

Gazprom seeks $1.95bn from Ukraine for past shipments of gas by the 10am Moscow time deadline (2amET) and will continue to seek upfront payments for any further shipments.

As Reuters notes,

Russia and Ukraine failed to resolve a gas pricing dispute at talks and a 0600 GMT deadline for Ukraine to pay $1.95 billion in gas debts still stands, a spokesman for Russian natural gas producer Gazprom said on Monday. Spokesman Sergei Kupriyanov said after talks in Kiev that Russia would switch to an advance payment system if it did not receive the money, meaning Moscow could cut off gas supplies to Ukraine.

Cutting supplies could disrupt the gas flow to the European Union.

“Cluster Of Central Banks” Have Secretly Invested $29 Trillion In The Market

Another conspiracy “theory” becomes conspiracy “fact” as The FT reports a cluster of central banking investors has become major players on world equity markets.” The report, to be published this week by the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF), confirms $29.1tn in market investments, held by 400 public sector institutions in 162 countries, which “could potentially contribute to overheated asset prices.” China’s State Administration of Foreign Exchange has become “the world’s largest public sector holder of equities”, according to officials, and we suspect the Fed is close behind (courtesy of more levered positions at Citadel), as the world’s banks try to diversify themselves and “counters the monopoly power of the dollar.” Which leaves us wondering where are the central bank 13Fs?

While most have assumed that this is likely, the recent exuberance in stocks has largely been laid at the foot of another irrational un-economic actor – the corporate buyback machine. However, as The FT reports, what we have speculated as fact for many years now (given the death cross of irrationality, plunging volumes, lack of engagement, and of course dwindling credibility of central planners)… is now fact…

I Have Lost Track

I thought Obama is supporting the Muslim Brotherhood? So are we now supporting the Shia? It appears that the media in the United States has modified the ISIS movement in Iraq/Syria from al Qaeda to Sunni rebels. Iran is supporting the current Iraqi Shia government with troops. Does this mean that the current US installed government in Iraq is now in bed with Iran?

Does anyone else need a scorecard to figure out which Islamic state the pResident is supporting?

I wish we had Thomas Jefferson as President: he understood the Muslim threat and took care of it. For those of you who voted for a Muslim pResident: your chickens are coming home to roost. Unfortunately, your chickens are also coming home to roost on the entire country.

Fantasy Legislation Introduced in North Carolina

Please-sir-may

Comments supporting an Article V Convention not based on facts will not be published.

I have several questions for people supporting this fantasy:

1. Who will be the representatives at this “convention”?

2. Have you read the Constitution? Since the government is not following the intent of the Constitution (hence this Convention), why would the representatives (politicians) be limited to the scope of the convention?

3. The last time we did this, the government was abolished (Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union) and the convention was renamed to be the Constitutional Convention.

4. What is the purpose of this legislation? As I understand it, enough states have already signed legislation to have this convention. And the government is ignoring it.

5. What will you do if the representatives decide that the 2nd amendment is no longer needed? See Matt Bracken’s Enemies Foreign and Domestic trilogy about the consequences of the Philadelphia Convention.

How To Zero Your AR-15 Rifle

Eyesight is straight, while bullet flight paths arc.

For purposes of this discussion, we’ll assume that we’re talking about a .223 Remington or 5.56mm caliber rifle, although at shorter distances, it really doesn’t matter as you’ll soon see.

Since the whole idea of zeroing is to line up your sights with the impact point of a bullet, you can set your “zero” just about wherever you want. But first, remember that the sightline is 2 ½ inches (give or take depending on your equipment) above the bore. For purposes of this discussion, our examples will assume we’re using a standard 55 grain .223 Remington cartridge.

  • If you set your zero close, say at 10 yards, you will have to align your sights so that the barrel points up very aggressively relative to the sight line. The barrel has to be angled up pretty severely for the bullet to move up 2 ½ vertically in such a short distance. As a result, after the bullet crosses the 10 yard zero, it will keep traveling upwards. Farther down range, say at 100 yards, the bullet will be 20 inches above your line of sight.
  • If you set your zero at 50 yards, the angles are less severe. The barrel is angled less aggressively towards the line of sight. With a 50 yard zero, your bullet will only be about 1.57 inches above the line of sight at 100 yards and height maxes out just over 2 inches above around 150 yards. From then on, it’s all down hill again.
  • If you set your zero at 100 yards, the bullet slowly arcs up to intersect the line of sight way down range. Coincidentally, with a 100 yard zero, the bullet never really travels above the line of sight. As soon as it intersects the line of sight at 100 yards, it starts the downward fall again.

As you can see, you have some decisions to make depending on how you anticipate shooting. If every single target you will ever shoot will be at the exact same distance, then set your zero for that distance. However, this is kind of unrealistic. Most people will need to be able to hit targets at different ranges, so you need to compromise.

Meet The “Minerva Research Initiative” – The Pentagon’s Preparation For “Mass Civil Breakdown”

About a month ago we showed photos of the Chinese police engaged in a drill designed to crush a “working class insurrection”, in which the police did precisely what would be required to end a middle class rebellion. It made us wonder: what does China know that the US doesn’t. As it turns out, nothing.

Because long before China was practicing counter-riot ops using rubber bullets, all the way back in 2008 the US Department of Defense was conducting studies on the dynamics of civil unrest, and how the US military might best respond. The name of the project: “Minerva Research Initiative” and its role is to ” “improve DoD’s basic understanding of the social, cultural, behavioral and political forces that shape regions of the world of strategic importance to the U.S.”

The Guardian which first revealed the details, reports that, “The multi-million dollar programme is designed to develop immediate and long-term “warfighter-relevant insights” for senior officials and decision makers in “the defense policy community,” and to inform policy implemented by “combatant commands.”

The premise behind Minerva is simple: study how violent political overthrow, aka mass civil breakdown, happens in the day and age of social networks, and be prepared to counteract it – by “targeting peaceful activities and protest movements” – when it finally reaches US shores.

From the Minerva Initiative website (http://minerva.dtic.mil/):

Just as our military forces could not effectively operate without understanding the physical terrain and environment, detection of radical actors and regime disruptions is limited by our understanding of the cultural and political environments where those threats develop. The Minerva Research Initiative, initiated by former Secretary Gates in 2008, seeks to build deeper understanding of the social, cultural, and political dynamics that shape regions of strategic interest around the world.

Deeper understanding of global populations and their variance as provided by Minerva-funded research will yield more effective strategic and operational policy decisions. Minerva scholars have already briefed valuable, warfighter-relevant insights to senior officials such as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, decision makers in the defense policy community, and on the ground to our combatant commands.

As the nascent program continues to grow, university-driven Minerva research will further enable critical social and cultural understanding to help decision makers effectively address today’s known and tomorrow’s unknown challenges.

ISIS Leader to USA: ‘Soon We Will be in Direct Confrontation’

Abu Bakr al Baghdadi

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), issued a rare audio message back on January 21 in which he flatly stated his group’s intention to march on Baghdad and move into “direct confrontation” with the United States.

“Our last message is to the Americans. Soon we will be in direct confrontation, and the sons of Islam have prepared for such a day,” Baghdadi said. “So watch, for we are with you, watching.”
