Sam Culper at Guerrillamerica has started a series called Executive Intelligence Summary (EXSUM). This will be an Economic Intelligence Summary ECSUM based on the same model.

There have been three extremely important economic stories released in the past week. Two have received very little coverage. The third concerning the amount of people giving up looking for work in the United States received some coverage yesterday (Jan. 10, 2014), but only because the numbers can no longer be ignored. It is my hope that you will pass this information along to get people to start thinking about the economy. Regardless of what our “leaders” state, unemployment benefits and disability will not lift our economy out of this depression.

Curious why despite the huge miss in payrolls the unemployment rate tumbled from 7.0% to 6.7%? The reason is because in December the civilian labor force did what it usually does in the New Normal: it dropped from 155.3 million to 154.9 million, which means the labor participation rate just dropped to a fresh 35 year low, hitting levels not seen since 1978, at 62.8% down from 63.0%.

States’ Rights, the 2nd Amendment and Maryland

Maryland does not have reciprocity with other states for concealed carry permits. Whether you open carry or conceal carry a legally owned firearm in Maryland is not an issue: it is illegal if you are out of state. Unless you are a licensed FFL dealer who can argue “transport” of firearms, you will find yourself in the same situation as Mr. Smartt below. Which was one of the reasons I stopped going back to Pennsylvania to visit relatives. But then I have a FFL and still don’t go back.

Weapons, including AK-47-style rifle, found in car after I-81 traffic stop

Scott C. Smartt, 51, of Needmore, Pa., has been charged with illegally transporting a handgun in a vehicle and possession of an assault weapon, according to a state police news release.

Smartt also was charged with not wearing a seat belt and using a hand-held phone.

Maryland State Police 1st Sgt. Kevin Lewis of the Hagerstown barrack said the traffic stop was not related to the fatal shooting last week on I-81 just north of the state line in Franklin County, Pa.

Police said a trooper and a cadet were patrolling I-81 near Halfway at about 2 p.m. Thursday when they saw a man driving a Lincoln while talking on a hand-held phone with no hands on the steering wheel.

Talking on a hand-held phone while driving is illegal in Maryland.

After stopping the car, the trooper saw a handgun in the glove box of the vehicle when Smartt was searching for the registration, the release said. Smartt was ordered out of the car and arrested without incident.

EPA overrides Congress, hands over town to Indian tribes

Have you heard the story of the residents of Riverton, Wyo.? One day they were Wyomingans, the next they were members of the Wind River tribes — after the Environmental Protection Agency declared the town part of the Wind River Indian Reservation, undoing a 1905 law passed by Congress and angering state officials.

The surprise decision was made by officials of the EPA, the Department of Interior, and Department of Justice early last month, and has invoked the ire of Gov. Matt Mead, who has vowed not to honor the agency’s decision and is preparing to fight in court.

“My deep concern is about an administrative agency of the federal government altering a state’s boundary and going against over 100 years of history and law,” Mead said in a statement. “This should be a concern to all citizens because, if the EPA can unilaterally take land away from a state, where will it stop?”

Senate Democrats Block Amendment to Restore Military Pensions

Senate Democrats on Thursday blocked a Republican attempt to restore military pensions cut in last month’s budget deal, denying a vote that would save up to $20 billion by closing a loophole that allows tax refunds to go to illegal aliens.

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D., Calif.) called an effort by Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R., N.H.) to repeal the military retiree cuts “fiddling while Rome burns.”

Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) “filled the amendment tree” on Thursday, ending debate and blocking any Republican amendments to a bill to extend unemployment insurance (UI) benefits.

Among them was Ayotte’s measure, which would repeal cuts to military pensions by ending a loophole in the tax code that allows illegal immigrants to receive the Additional Child Tax Credit. Her attempt to get a vote failed 42-54, with only one Democrat, Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.), voting with Republicans.

2014: The Year of Creative Destruction

As November looms on the distant horizon the political parties start the big push toward the general election. This used to mean that they would send out fundraising materials, start scheduling fundraisers and begin the long push to the general election. Today, it means that the main political parties will endeavor first to crush any primary challenges from their left, or right.

The dissatisfaction with traditional political parties has grown among the general public and have led to those still struggling to find relevance in organizations which have lost credibility. There are the die-hards amongst us who continue, despite all logical evidence to the contrary, to believe in politics. As evidence of this, 42% of the American public now identify themselves as independents. It would seem that it would be an ideal time for the Independent party to make some inroads, but that is not quite the case.

Those who identified with the term Independent were largely, when pushed, to be Democrats. One might assume that these are the disillusioned Democrats who have found that everything Barack Obama told them was a lie; who discovered that they could not keep their healthcare plan; who have had their businesses wrecked by Obama’s economic policies; who have been pushed off of the unemployment roles to reduce the amount of “unemployed” because those who no longer receive benefits are not counted as unemployed, they simply disappear from the statistics, thereby lowering the unemployment rate.

Baltic Dry Index Collapses 35% – Worst Start To Year In 30 Years

When this indicator of global trade rises, everything is rosy and reams of asset-gatherers and talking-heads wil quote it as indicative of how great the world is. When it drops – silence. There’s always an excuse – over- or under-capacity, too many ships, too few ships, etc. However, the last 2 weeks have seen a 35% collapse in the cost to ship bulk. There is a relative seasonal pattern over the holiday period – with shipping costs rising into the holiday and falling after but… this is the biggest drop from a Christmas Eve since at least 1984, 30 years! Seems like the inventory stacking of Q4 had absolutely no follow-through whatsoever…

How Time and Uncertainty Can Make Us “Antifragile”

No two buzzwords define the present crisis more than “contagion” and “robustness” in the world of economists and policy wonks. The current interrelated nature of the financial system has bred a fragile situation where the success of the greater economy supposedly hinges on its individual components, such as banks that are too big to fail. To combat this fragility, economists have increasingly sought to build robust institutions. Such institutions will remain strong in the face of adverse effects if an individual component of the economy fails — be it subprime mortgages, sovereign debt, deposit-taking institutions or investment banks. This approach to the crisis stresses that if we cannot battle contagion, we had better construct strong institutions to weather future storms.

Nassim Taleb takes great issue with this approach in his new book Antifragile. His view is that constructing such so-called robust institutions is not sufficient as they continually fight yesterday’s battles. Instead the focus should be in building “antifragile” insti­tutions. Although often confused with robustness or resilience, an antifragile institution is not only unharmed by adverse events, but is actually strengthened by them. Building antifragile institutions will not only strengthen the global economic arena, but also have wide-ranging social applications.
