I live far below the Mason Dixon line and our has very few really cold nights to sleep though. For a really small and light sleeping bag, I combine a GI poncho liner (i.e. woobie) with a bivy cover to sleep in. For temperatures above 50 degrees, not a problem to stay warm enough, especially if you locate yourself out of the wind. Adding a watch cap makes that even more effective.
Thanks for that tip on adding pad inside bag -- I should have thought of that myself.
Forgot to add -- using the bivy cover inside a sleeping hammock adds some needed heat retention when the weather is cool. We live in an area with many stinging ground base insects (fire ants -- centipedes -- rattlesnakes) so sleeping above the ground really helps your peace of mind.
Looks like a lot of bulk. How about just a small tent, a throw rug inside, and a poncho liner. If you need more than that, you shouldn’t be sleeping outside. I’m assuming this scenario is for people on the run, not just camping. If you have to, you can even get rid of the tent and throw rug. I’ve seen bums sleeping in the woods during chilly weather with just a blanket.
