Satellite Images of the 2011 Mississippi Flood

The top image is a satellite photo of a portion of the Mississippi River from April 29th, 2010. The image underneath is taken one year later on April 28th, 2011.

As the flood continues to expand in scope throughout the month of May, the following map outlines the areas impacted over the next few days:

The impact of this epic flood on corn, soybean and wheat crops for 2011 will not be known for several weeks. The winter wheat crop is Texas is a different story.

Amazing image of the fires raging in the Davis Mountains, near near the MacDonald Observatory telescopes in West Texas. These fires will definitely impact the price of wheat.

Texas Wildfires Threaten Wheat Crop, Drive Food Prices Higher

Some agricultural experts are now predicting that Texas will lose two thirds of this year’s wheat crop to drought and fire. And Texas is not the only U.S. state suffering from widespread crop damage this spring; Kansas and Oklahoma are also dealing with serious drought conditions, while Iowa and Minnesota are facing predictions of major floods.

Speculation that U.S. grain production will be unusually low this year drove wheat prices to a two-month high on Tuesday, which may have been good news for certain commodities speculators, but was bad news for pretty much everyone else on the planet.

Even with the price increases on gas and food this year, we have to admit that we are still blessed with abundance compared to the rest of the world.
