Speeding Through the Fourth Turning

In 1997, William Strauss and Neil Howe published a book titled The Fourth Turning, where they examine five hundred years of history and uncover a pattern, one they believe will help people better understand modern history. They claim history moves in cycles composed of four “turnings.” Each turning lasts approximately twenty years and they always arrive in the same order.

The turnings are:

  1. High Confident Expansion – new takes place when old is swept away.
  2. Awakening – spiritual exploration and rebellion against the now-established order.
  3. Unraveling – increased troubles, individualism triumphs over failing institutions.
  4. Crisis – or, the Fourth Turning, where society passes through perilous times.

These four turnings are a part of the heartbeat of civilizations as they inevitably go through stages of growth, maturation, entropy, and rebirth. They conclude that, “Sometime before the year 2025, America will pass through a great gate in history, commensurate with the American Revolution, Civil War, and twin emergencies of the Great Depression and World War II.”

It would seem America is in an unraveling and entering, or already in, the first stages of a fourth turning.

The evidence surrounds us as our society is in decay, not only physically but spiritually, morally, and psychologically. Picture yourself on the beach and you have been warned there was just a large underwater earthquake not far offshore. Next, you see the water rush away from you. You know the signs of an incoming tsunami and you have two choices.

Do you futilely attempt to gather everybody else together, warn them, and then form a human chain to stop the crush of the wave—though most do not believe you anyway? Or do you find those who recognize, like you, that what is happening cannot be stopped but only survived? To stop such an event due to its size and scale is impossible for any human. Perhaps it is better to find a way to get to the other side of the event as fast as possible. By doing this you are better prepared to provide necessary leadership during the period of “High Confident Expansion.”

I agree with option two, that America is approaching a period where we are imminently passing through an unraveling and soon to be in perilous times. But not only America, for I frequently talk to people around the world who reach the same conclusions, primarily in mostly democratic societies. I believe that the leadership of Christ’s church is the only means to successfully survive this societal tsunami, and we must prepare ourselves to lead through the darkness and to be the leaders coming out of the darkness. We must prepare spiritually, mentally, and physically to withstand not only the strain of knowing what is likely coming, but that of living through it also.

Put more succinctly.

Hard times create strong men.
Hard men create good times.
Good times create soft men.
Sof men create hard times.

Americans were mostly adverse to cultivating men for many decades, wherein many mothers desired a ‘mama’s boy’ with their son/s (in the negative sense), rather than one who would independently lead his life, for instance. Also, in the churches, men are often not encouraged and trained to be responsible in courtship, marital or familial relationships. Among the most obvious indicators, is the amount of unwed mother’s that have and are receiving state assistance because society would not direct hold the men accountable. If this were not the case, there wouldn’t be so few men lacking initiative and direction with regards to a mission to set out on and necessary life skill sets, and many articles talk about how most men have few to no close male friends; it’s mostly about being stoic (hyperindividualistic) as a matter of displaying what’s expected in modern manhood anyway (from trends determined from external means mostly; media, propaganda, and agenda-driven policies throughout institutions).

Shout Jesus from the mountains
Jesus in the streets
Jesus in the darkness over every enemy
Jesus for my family
I speak the holy name
Jesus (Jesus)
‘Cause Your name is power
Your name is healing
Your name is life
Break every stronghold
Shine through the shadows
Burn like a fire

Patriots are missing a critical trick -- all these people who hanker after receiving ‘free stuff’ and universal income, need to have their eyes opened to the fact they are ‘self-identifying’ as useless eaters. There should be a meme campaign about that.

More to the point, do patriots have a role in establishing and maintaining a robust economy? If they do, then they must bear some of the responsibility, such as in establishing social and economic safety nets and making provisions for suitable work and shelter for many of these individuals, as a matter of integration into a new system of mutualism, per se.

The Fourth Turning by Strauss and Howe is a great book, if you haven’t already read it… like 12 bucks used on DeNile.

In a subsequent interview, Howe said that the four turnings can be seen simply as an aspect of one thing: supply and demand for order.
“order”, and “the demand for order”.

  1. low order, low demand = weak men create hard times
  2. low order, high demand = hard times create strong men
  3. high order, high demand = strong men create good times
  4. high order, low demand = good times create weak men

chaos creates demand for order, order creates demand for freedom
