Risk can be managed.

You must understand the technology in minutia, to understand it’s potential and avoid risk, or you must understand that you do *not* understand the technology, and avoid the technology because you do not/cannot understand it. (some technology has reached a level of complexity such that even it’s creators *cannot* understand it, as in the three body problem)

This is why we have big brains… it’s the only way you can defend yourself from other big brains. It’s an arms race, and it’s been going on a very long time.

In the case of USB, your operating system must deny access to USB devices it does not already recognize, including all descriptors.
