I work for WM on the Store Planning side. This is the first I have heard of this, so I will poke where I can and see if this is legit.
With that, It would not surprise me if they did, but at the same time something like this is only useful for a limited outage. If it was something major that took power out for a week, there is going to be issues with the rest of the supply chain getting stuff there to sell anyway. The warehouses, delivery, the goods to sell available to ship there, etc.
What good is it to have a functional store if you have no stock to sell.
Back up source of energy is a prudent decision for stores that sell food. It’s only a temporary solution. But better than nothing.
UPDATE: Fromm what I could gather with the limited upper Managment I could ask and be sure to get correct information, so far this is not happening. At best they feel some at risk stores due to other factors like frequent power issues or in areas prone to nat. disasters it might be done, but no storewide plan in the works.
