The inadequate-paying service economy has caused many to become work-averse, not only for reasons of pay but the toll it takes on them as these jobs tend to demand forty to eighty-plus hours a week. The individual is usually not enriched by the work and the environment, and it tends to detract from what the person wanted to do with their capabilities. This regressive (by reason of policy) economy is another reason that the U.S. is a replacement territory, as a majority of the population are not learning skills for upward mobility, as their time gets taken up by managing poverty (working two and three jobs, which often diminishes their health). It seems that the college and university degrees that are often touted as necessary for a good-paying job, are just to pacify the people and redirect their energies away from a political awareness, as they’ll be scrambling to find practically anything to help them pay the rent upon graduation. This also effects how people feel about their country; if they can’t earn, why take on more responsibility?
