Will This Be the Focal Point for the American Spring?

George Zimmerman (shown above) is the center of the controversial death of Trayvon Martin in Florida.  A Google search on Trayvon Martin will currently return over 500 million hits. Although Mr. Zimmerman has been described as a “light skinned Hispanic”, this incident is being used as a racially motivated hate crime to incite the black community and the Occupy Wall Street movement.

The facts are:

  1. Trayvon Martin is dead.
  2. Mr. Zimmerman was not arrested.
  3. The Department of Justice is investigating this case.

Here is a portion of the 911 call:

“Million Hoodie March” in New York Rallies Support for Trayvon Martin

John Minchillo / AP

From Time:

Supporters chanted “we want arrests!” and “we are all Trayvon” as they marched, many clad in hooded sweatshirts symbolic of the clothing Martin wore when he was killed. Though his murder was a catalyst for organizing the rally, several in attendance suggested a more general motivation for attending. ”This is something that can happen anywhere in America,” said Arthur Roberts, a clothing designer, as he marched. “The injustice for colored people in America is ridiculous, and it always has been.”

I pray for justice in this case as all Americans should. I also pray that the death of Trayvon Martin will not become the focal point to start civil unrest throughout the nation.

The New Republic:

And yet so far Zimmerman is a free man. Unless the public has been grievously misled about what happened to Trayvon Martin, it would be nothing less than sinful for Zimmerman to go unpunished. So much so that for the first time in my life, a part of me would almost understand those who might be moved to wreak civil unrest in response.

The Independent Business News Network:

This is a horrible re-make of the Emmit Till incident in 2012. The sad part of this incident, until there is civil unrest, insurrection, protest and resistance by the Black people of Florida, based on the current laws, Zimmerman might just walk away.

MSNBC: Rep. Wilson: Trayvon’s death is ‘murder’

“i think that particular bill needs to be tweaked, that particular law. and we already have senators who are looking at it because when the bill was passed, nobody ever dreamed that it would cause these kinds of situations. in fact, in the state of of florida , when i was in the state senate , i passed a bill that’s called the commission on the status, the social status of black men and boys, simply because we have so much a real issue about black men and boys in this nation. and we need to stop and look at all of those things that that’s happening. that particular law needs to be tweaked. it needs to be changed. it needs to be investigated and that council would be a great place to begin to look at it. i tonight think this was racial profiling , this was murder.”

An interesting aspect to this case is the use of tags in articles concerning this story. Although “civil unrest” is not used in many of the articles being written, “civil unrest” is being used as a tag for the articles.
