Ladies and Gentlemen
I have been informed that a compromise is being considered regarding HB 937.
Making our state’s outdated pistol permit system even more cumbersome is both wrong and will cost you my vote in future elections.
One of the principle reasons North Carolina has been my home for more than 40 years is simply BECAUSE it afforded residents easy access to weapons for the protection of self and family.
ALL GUN CONTROL MEASURES across the United States HAVE BEEN ABJECT FAILURE when measured against the stated objectives of the proponents. Examples are hard to ignore: Chicago, DC; and the following Senate condemnation regarding BATFE:
“Although Congress adopted the Gun Control Act (1968) with the primary object of limiting access of felons and high-risk groups to firearms, the overbreadth of the law has led to neglect of precisely this area of enforcement. …figures demonstrate that in recent years the percentage of its arrests devoted to felons in possession and persons knowingly selling to them have dropped from 14 percent down to 10 percent of their firearms cases.”

Speaker Tillis, Representative Schaffer and Governor McCrory are poised to bow to the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association pressure regarding pistol permits and NICS checks. This would result in adding infringement upon infringement, and be a slap in the face of individual liberty for all persons of good character residing in North Carolina.
By adding layers of restrictions in the form ‘malum prohibitum’, you are training good people to ignore you and the “statist” aspirations of both political parties. Learning to ignore you might not be a bad thing for liberty. I offer some historic insight into the behavior you encourage:
“Good people don’t need laws to tell them how to act responsibly, and bad people will find a way around the laws.”
– Plato
“When law and morality contradict each other, the citizen has the cruel alternative of either losing his moral sense or losing his respect for the law.”
– Bastiat
“I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.”
– Heinlein
Pass HB 937 as originally intended: to REPEAL INFRINGEMENTS. Do not substitute other infringements or add encumbrances to our persons and property.
“The conclusion is thus inescapable that the history, concept, and wording of the second amendment to the Constitution of the United States, as well as its interpretation by every major commentator and court in the first half-century after its ratification, indicates that what is protected is an individual right of a private citizen to own and carry firearms in a peaceful manner.”

Like the inverse of Gresham’s Law in economics (“bad money drives out good”) a population of free men who own and carry firearms in a peaceful manner will drive bad actors from our communities and from our State.
Make North Carolina a beacon of liberty by ensuring that all men have easy access to arms.
PASS HB 937 as intended.

“Proponents of any level of “gun control” are advocating slavery. Your most basic right is that you own yourself. That’s axiomatic. …
“If you do not have the right to any and all tools for self-defense, your ability to defend your rights is less than 100%. If you can’t defend your rights, you can’t maintain self-ownership. Your right to self-ownership is proportional to your right to access the tools of self-defense.
“Therefore gun control leads to an inability to defend oneself which leads to slavery. Being for “reasonable gun control” is logically consistent with being for “reasonable slavery”.
– Peter Holt Hoffman
