The Government Committee discussed HB 877 at the general assemby today:
A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT TO PROVIDE SPACE ON THE INCOME TAX RETURN FOR INDIVIDUALS TO MAKE DONATIONS TO THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA FOR GOVERNMENTAL SERVICES.
What appeared to be an innocuous piece of legislation turned into an hour long debate on the role of the general assembly and personal assaults. As shown in the following video during the course of the debate, representatives stated:
- North Carolina is so broke that we need a fundraiser to prop us up
- Our government is broken (not broke)
- People who wake up at 3:00 AM to make a donation to education would have this opportunity under this legislation
- Only four other states in the country have a worse budget crisis than North Carolina
- The Department of Public Safety only builds more prisons to incarcerate black Americans
- It is the general assembly’s fault for our fiscal crisis
- People do not want the 1% sales tax to expire at the end of June
- The right makes charitable contributions but the left uses government programs to fund their charities
- This legislation is only a means to extend the 1% sales tax
I realize that the video below is almost 15 minutes long, but it will give you an insight into the fiscal state of North Carolina and the quality of our legislators.

I believe that this legislation is a ploy to use our children’s education to gain more power and tax revenues. If this is true, our state’s government is not only broken, it is evil.

You’ve got to be kidding me. We already have a line on our tax forms to give to NC, it is called taxes. It was difficult for me to hear this video so I could not quite get all of it. Can you tell me how Dale Folwell, the first man in the video thought about it? He is our representative. Also are these hearings open to the public?
