Allowed into East Berlin before wall came down. There was NOTHING this clean or modern. All buildings were soot blackened, filthy. Insides were clean but tiny and sparce, cept the Stoly aisle. That was very well stocked. Three dollars a liter.

I was in East Germany in 75 and experienced the same…dark, dirty and very little selection. Was offered $300 for my Levi’s and $1,000 for my western boots.
