H 786 Reclaim NC Act- Congratulations!
Dear NCFIRE members,
Sometimes in politics, nothing is better than something and in the case of H 786-Reclaim NC Act, that is exactly what we got; nothing.
Illegal aliens will not be given drivers’ permits and ID cards however, there will be no enforcement of illegal immigration laws either, so we can still claim victory in one sense.
Thanks to your calls and emails, Rep. Warren and the House leadership (Thom Tillis) could not garner enough support to pass this disaster of a bill. A bill which catered more to illegal aliens than it did to NC citizens and our unemployed.

State immigration reform fizzles

RALEIGH, N.C. — After more than a year of work, House leaders have given up on a bill that would have made big changes to state immigration laws, including allowing driving permits for people in the country illegally. House Bill 786 was turned into a study bill by a floor amendment during debate Tuesday.
What the article doesn’t tell you is what they really did. The NC House did vote on a part of the bill; the part that defines an employee who is exempt from the e-verify laws, currently on the books. By doing so, they completely gutted the current law.
This was done by changing the definition of workers under e-verify, as anyone who works “less than ten months” . They are now labeled a “seasonal worker” and do not have to have their names run through the e-verify system to determine legal status. This effectively allows an untold number of businesses and industries to label their employees “seasonal workers” , thereby filling the jobs available with low wage illegal aliens.
We are currently working with a number of Representatives to get this changed as well and will keep you updated as to the progress.
Even if they don’t get it changed, We do not believe that enough Senators are in favor of the language to pass it. Also, there is only 1 week left in the session and that is not enough time for debate and the three votes needed to approve it.
I want to personally thank you for all of your efforts, it paid off. This just proves that we really can make a difference and that all it takes is one voice, yours!
