Has anyone read the Stephen King book ‘Doctor Sleep’ or the movie of the same name starring Ewen McGregor? (It is a sequel to “The Shining”). I saw it 2 years ago before I had ever heard of Adrenochrome. In the movie/book they called it ‘steam’ but, it was the same thing only with the different name. A roving band of modern day gypsies go from RV park to RV park all over the country (no horses and wagons; modern day RV’s!) from which they group, and then kidnap, torture (to kick up the adrenaline) and then kill children for this sick drug that they would inhale to keep them young.
Looking back on that I see now that King was doing what these elite, sick bastards like to do — tell everyone what they are doing through movies, tv shows, cartoons (can you say “the Simpson’s) and magazines like ‘The Economist’.
Stephen King has released much over the years. Very insightful , or guided by a spirit?

1) Adrenocrhome is simply an oxidized form of epinerphrine (adrenalline). It is a biologic waste product.
2) It can relatively easily be made in vitro either directly or from epinephrine (which can also be made comercially in vitro). Starting with epinephrine, you can make it in a single pot by adding methanol and a bit of formic or acetic acid and silver oxide, and there are a number of other methods. Not that many people would bother.

3) It is not an elixir of youth. Like many waste products, it is actually damaging, being directly cardiotoxic and causing death of heart muscle. It does this, among other ways, by acting as a mitochondrial poison. Back in the 1950s, people used to think that excess accumulation of adrenochrome was a cause of schizophrenia, but it didn’t pan out.
Because it is a waste product of the breakdown of adrenalin and is pigmented and can easily be measured by looking at the color of serum, it is sometimes used as a proxy for measuring adrenaline levels. Thus, when levels of adrenaline are increased, so are the levels of its immediate breakdown products, such as in exercise, stress, or even drinking soft drinks.
Because it is a toxic waste product, it is rapidly broken down in the body and transformed into another metabolite called adrenolutein, which is excreted through the kidneys.
