Another important issue covered. Communication and intelligence will be very important, post internet.

Apparently there is a contender for the Baofeng, the Quansheng UV-K5. There is the possibility to unlock frequencies for transmission. The guy mentions in the 2nd video of using a Nagoya antenna. Maybe get one before they become illegal.

The Channel has a 3 or 4 videos on this radio so far.

I have a couple of the UV-5R radios. plan to buy the upgrade for longer range. Concern I have is will these radios even function after an EMP? How do I protect them? Is a copper mesh cage sufficient?

A Fariday cage should be sufficient; however I wrap mine in tin foil and then put them in a metal equipment cabinet. A dead microwave would work as well, or metal trash can, again wrap them in tin foil.

If you are using CB or short wave be sure to get an antenna matcher and SWR meters, for all external antennas. SWR meters are helpful on all channels and HZ, a Bird meter is a good choice with different slugs for different HZ and power. A lightning arrester is helpful on all external antennas.

A copy of the Radio Amateur hand book is a good source for info.

Not an electronic geek, nor did I stay in the Holiday Inn Express.

But I have done search and rescue with the Air National Guard, and we discussed how we find folks with the weakest signal from their DEAD Cell Phones. Most of the limits of radio is terrain and an eye in the sky eliminates that when searching.

I also have some concern about all the nearly AT COST (I.E. No profit) communication devices INCLUDING Cell Phones from China. AND how the Biden regime despite concerns are sourcing their gear from China.

If grid is down any unknown electronic signature is going to be investigated. By drone perhaps? All gear has mean time between failure issues so wear and tear is a problem even for the feds.

Me and mine are going dark once things get spicy.

I have been an “electronics geek” since childhood, a 4 year military career in “radio comminications,” a television broadcast engineer until retirement, I know too much about Radio Direction Finding. Once you transmitt, BANG! Your ass has been located. Also, if you have a recieve only device, it also can be located by the RF emission of the local oscillator (also true for a transmit device. You may not have clicked on the transmit button, but the L.O. is singing away)!

All true, keep your radios off and antennas disconnected when not in use, and communications short after TSHTF! Local oscillator emission is slight, but still identifiable at close range, as are computers.

Yep, and if you shut off the power grid for a few days the electronic clutter fades away.

LEAVING the “Well Prepared Chatter” for ID and destruction.

They only have a few hundred predators I hear. Why be a Prime Target?

That works both ways, if you have a spectrum analyzer, while you can’t pin point a location, you can direction find and be aware of new radio sources. These days they are relatively cheap and abundant.

If you have enough power to run one a Tektronix 535 or 545 are at almost give away prices and EMP proof, as are all older tube equipment, old mechanical meters, as well as VTVM’s

A good video. Lots of information in 12 minutes. Getting many different radios will be expensive and time consuming. (My Opinion) Classic Citizens Band radio ( 11 meters) is a good selection. Cheap, plentiful, and still lots of traffic in many parts of the county. Available in handheld, mobile, and base. Lots of antennas via 10 meters HAM radio. Do NOT modify your new radio. Stay with the FCC power- 4 watts AM, 12 watts SSB. Why? Because power, in a SHTF situation, is precious. You can always buy a 10 meter amp if you want to be a Power Ranger.
Next pick would be AT LEAST purchase some FRS walkie talkies. Yeah, they are 2 watts only with a fixed antenna but they can put out a good FM signal for your immediate neighborhood. 3/4 mile? They are also related to GMRS radio frequencies should you want to upgrade.
