Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear

The following video shows an incident of a New York City police inspector using pepper spray on protesters without provocation. Should he be investigated and disciplined? Yes. Should MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell use this incident as a wide brush against the country’s police? No.

Do you agree with Mr. O’Donnell that the bravest people were the ones with video cameras? Whatever your answer, the police used excessive force against people for exercising their first amendment rights. And this is what this movement was waiting for in order to gain sympathy and momentum.

Let’s hope that we understand that the pressure coming from the bottom up should not force us to accept the “helping hand” from the top down. We must not allow our quest for security to override our natural right of freedom.

“Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.”

Benjamin Franklin

We do not have to be sheep that are led to the right or left because we have free will to make our own choices. Our country is reaping the consequences of bad choices in the political arena but we must not let them create crises in order to herd us down the road to serfdom.
