In Japan–high school is not mandatory. You can elect to enter an apprenticeship to learn a trade. To enter a ‘good’ high school (to enter college) you must pass a series of exams. Sometimes you’ll have to ride trains up to an hour to attend school.
Now if a kid were to commit an act of violence against a teacher or another student, they’d be immediately arrested and expelled (permanently) from a public school. Depending on the severity of the assault–they’d either be sentenced to a juvenile prison–or forced to then on attend a ‘cattle pen’ style school where they are literally held, caged off from instructors.
Unlike here in the United States, in Japan violent behavior is dealt with severely.
