OK. So we’re in a glum mood. Elections stolen. Leftists and globalists running things. The whole of Western Civ circling the drain. WWIII possible if not already in progress. Comes Michael Yon with some humor … sort of. Well, maybe more a serious suggestion given in a humorous manner as to how to raise our youngsters. I personally was raised with most of this, but I’ve yet to pilot an A-10 and I still use an AR15. I do, however, have a .308 M1A for heavy duty chores.
Witness this Al Qaeda shot four times at point blank, including splattering a testicle. The terrorist, with one remaining testicle and gut-shot, still did admirable hand-to-hand. And did not die for eight months. Gotta respect a man who can get an egg shot off and still try to bite you. But this never would have happened with 7.62×51.
Shout out to Western Rifle Shooters from whence this was found.
I don’t know, the AR certainly has its close in place. There are no doubts there, but a bull barreled .308 with a nice long range Vortex scope is a superior weapon in some instances. Then I’ll toss in a .338 WM for the really heavy slogging.
Agreed. An AR10(or similar) is great but humping all that extra weight in ammo in an urban zone takes its toll. Ill take 556, more rounds for the weight considering most targets will be 50 yards or less and what we’ll be seeing soon definitely looks more urban!
Heads up…another cryptocurrency, this time blockfi, is considering bankruptcy. If you have money in crypto-which i hope you’re way too smart for that-I’d get it out now, while you still can. I am sure this is all planned in order to set the stage and justify the central bank digital currency-I.E. the “can’t buy or sell w/out the mark of the beast” currency upcoming.
More on topic-the 5.56 is at once the “industry standard” for its many benefits, and one of the poorest performers of the modern combat cartridges. Of the operators I know, they all use the 77 gr. That said, the AR platform is highly portable, modular, readily available, affordable and user friendly. Its like the ground-pounder’s F-16…cheap, acceptable performance, can’t do everything, but does plenty, plenty well. While I have other preferences, I also prefer to have “the industry standard” available.
you have to remember what the issued round was at the time Yon was over there, it was known to be a poor performer, because it is.
.77 gr OTM works in its expected range and use.
What are the pitfalls of 7.62x39, anyway?
None really. Range is effective out to about 300 meters. At 123 gr., the rounds are 2 to 3x heavier than 5.56, so more hitting energy. However, cheap imported surplus ammo is kinda tough. For a close quarters weapon its hard to beat. SF in Vietnam were pretty fond of AK’s.
When I worked at a tactical shop we got lotsa “should I get an AK or an AR?” My answer-smart money has at least one of each. That said, the AR platform lends itself generally speaking to better accuracy, and the AK tends towards highly reliable, but its possible to screw up either attribute in either platform-and its possible to improve either attribute in either platform. Since imported AK’s are virtually unobtainium now, I’d probably go the Palmetto route if I was looking for one NIB. The Arsenal product is hard to beat, but price wise they sting a little bit. If I was shopping between a 762x39 AK and a 300 Blackout right now I’d probably go with the AK just because of ammo availability as the ballistics are similar. Mountain Rat (below) speaks sagaciously regarding the 6.5 grendel, but once again ammo scroungability is going to be a sore spot should the grid go down. That all said, if I had to do it over, I’d probably get a couple of Bulgarian underfolders and several spam cans of 762x39, and a few of the Sig Patrols in 5.56 and load up on spare parts, and augment that with a couple of DSA’s 308’s. And back to the advantage of a mil spec gas impingement guns-the parts are all pretty much interchangeable so the scroungability of AR parts should be pretty high-the point of the advantage of having the “industry standard” in one’s battery. Tired of talking politics…just wanted to talk about guns a bit.
The 6.5 Grendel fixes all the downsides to the 5.56 in the same platform. It has become my favorite cartridge.
I have two M1A’s and a nice bull barrel bolt gun in .308/7.62x51but if I could only have one it would be my AR in 6.5 Grendel.
I will respectively listen to the Special Forces sergeant who had over 20 years in the military. The AR-15 is more accurate than an AK47. This discussion comes up often. Like Ford vs. Chevy.
You know what else? This is just another example of how we divide ourselves on worthless issues. Does it matter which battle rifle is superior if all you are willing to do is sit at a keyboard?
The reason I posted this was not to start a pissing contest over rifles or to cause division. The reason I posted it is that I found it to be a humorous way of suggesting how young men should be raised around firearms. My son is a Marine and owns lots of ARs. I own several. There are lots of reasons to support their use, many outlined here in the comments.
Some of you evidently missed the parts about the alligators and flying the A10 Warthog. I found that funny. I guess my sense of humor is warped. Had I known that many of you would have jumped into an argument over calibers and platforms, I’d have chuckled over this and then kept it to myself. I just thought we could use a little levity. I guess we’re well past that.
I did not gloss over the alligator or A-10 parts. I am not in a good humor as I watch us descend into a decadent oblivion. It did not help that an ATF agent harassed us at work today for over 3 hours.
I don’t know why people don’t storm the Bastille and free the J6 political prisoners. For the record, I don’t like Fords or Chevys.
Please do not tell me you are a dodge man. i may leave.
Chuckle.
So why atf or do you care to talk about?
I thought it was a good article, with some humor Malachi. Whatever rifle you use is of no consequence to anyone but yourself.
we have good days and bad days. we are all individuals.
Thinking on building a Ar 10, did not think the mailman would approve.
From 1919 passing the 19th, to the average age of Vietnam vets being 19. it’s about destruction.
