Not to make too fine a point of it, yes, from the Crown’s perspective, the Founding Fathers were traitors. Had they been captured and tried, they would no doubt have been convicted and hanged for treason. Yet, they obviously never were tried (because events somehow overtook them), so they were never actually found guilty of a felony.
When you look at history and then look around today, consider how much these men were risking when they signed the Declaration of Independence. Americans today will continue watching “America’s Got Talent” and sports and do little or nothing about current events, even when elections are stolen by the suppression of political stories, political hoaxes are bandied about by the media, and political candidates are barred from social media in the middle of a race. From his La-Z-Boy recliner in front of his big screen TV, the Average Guy asks, “Well, what can I do about it?” and then he does nothing more than paste political memes on his Facebook page.
These “Founding Traitors,” on the other hand placed their signature–for the entire world to see–on the Declaration of Independence which ended with these words, “And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”
My, how times, and men, have changed today
Your post got my thinking about the Nicholes Cage line from National Treasure. Yes the founding fathers in fact committed treason against the royal crown. To high treason! That’s what these men were committing when they signed the Declaration. Had we lost the war, they would have been hanged, beheaded, drawn and quartered, and – Oh! Oh, my personal favorite and had their entrails cut out and burned! So, here’s to the men who did what was considered wrong in order to do what they knew was right.
Ten Bears : “It’s sad that governments are chiefed by the double tongues. There is iron in your words of death for all Comanche to see, and so there is iron in your words of life. No signed paper can hold the iron. It must come from men. The words of Ten Bears carries the same iron of life and death. It is good that warriors such as we meet in the struggle of life… or death. It shall be life.”
