Incremental collectivism is difficult to spot; it is sloth-like in its deliberation, but it does move and sometimes it helps to look back down the road to see how far it has come. Maybe that’s also the only way to see where it’s going.

Americans continue to think they live in a republic, but the republic is alive only when the Constitution is being faithfully read and adhered to, not when it is largely disregarded or interpreted into nothingness, especially where case law is considered “settled.”

What clause allows for an establishment of a Department of Education? Well, the “necessary and proper” clause, of course. Except that the necessary and proper clause only applies to those limited powers enumerated in the body of the Constitution. Same with the “Commerce Clause” they have used to implement all manner of collectivism.

The elites of today envision themselves modern day Pharaohs willing to enslave us all for their grand vision. What is that vision? Who knows? Who cares? The fact that they feel entitled to redirect our lives to serve their vision is enough for me, because in order to achieve their vision our lives must be redirected through voluntary financial benefit or force and either one will work for them.

The first thing they want to destroy is the concept of individual self-determination; which is the only goal, in my mind, worth pursuing. It is the fact that I see this as the goal and they see it as an obstacle that propels us toward conflict.

Unfortunately, when individuals are concentrated on pursuing their own individual goals of self-determination it creates a vacuum that attracts those who envision aggregating that energy, that resource, as they see it and putting it to use to build a pyramid of their design. So it is an inevitable cycle toward war.

The richest vein in the history of predatory mining is just about played out.

A gigantic mine engages in every conceivable destructive practice—strip mining, heap leaching, tailings dams and ponds and so on. It pays such low wages its workers only make ends meet by borrowing from the company at usurious rates. The mine has befouled the air and poisoned the water. Many workers are chronically sick and their children are afflicted with birth defects. The mine’s absentee owners know that the mine is played out and the tailings dam is structurally unsound. They close the mine, count their profits, and move on. A month later the dam gives way. A deluge of noxious sludge inundates the town below the dam, sparing no one and rendering the area uninhabitable.

The government is a strip mining operation, plundering the dwindling residual value of a once wealthy America. Forget ostensible justifications, policy is crafted to allow those who control the government to maximize their take and put the costs on their victims, leaving devastation in their wake.

A great deal of one’s ability to feel secure – i.e., prepared for likely developments rather than threatened by them – depends upon the stability of one’s surroundings, both physically and conceptually. You can be the biggest, toughest, meanest SOB in all of Creation, armed to the teeth, ready, willing and able to fight a grizzly barehanded and utterly confident that you’d prevail, and you’ll still value the sense that things around you won’t change too swiftly or too radically. This is especially the case with persons who have loved ones to support, nurture, and protect.

Conservatism in politics arises from the sense that things must not be permitted to change rapidly. The political conservative holds, with the two great Thomases (Aquinas and Jefferson), that stability in the law is valuable in and of itself. Even if some change in the law appears necessary or highly desirable, he’s loath to introduce it in a fashion likely to destabilize the settled arrangements of millions. He recognizes both the tendency of men to adapt to their surroundings and the stress and fatigue that rapid adaptation engenders. He’s probably experienced some of it himself.
