I’ve been working on collections of quotes lately, and I have one more that I’d like to present… this one on the thoughts of rulers.

For a number of years I’ve been telling people that the incentives faced by productive people and the incentives facing rulers (of whatever stripe) are very, very different. This list, I believe, will make that point.

You’ll find quotes from ‘bad’ rulers on this list, of course, but also some from the ‘good’ rulers. And please note that the ‘bad’ ones are very often held in high regard in their times. Joseph Stalin, for example – the #2 most prolific killer in all of human history – was the ‘great ally’ of the US in World War II and was routinely presented to the American public as “Uncle Joe.”

So, beginning with Uncle Joe, here are the things that rulers believe:

Joseph Stalin

• Education is a weapon whose effects depend on who holds it in his hands and at whom it is aimed.
• Ideas are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemies have guns, why should we let them have ideas?
• Gratitude is a sickness suffered by dogs.

Mao Zedong

• The cult of xenophobia is the cheapest and surest method of obtaining from the masses the ignorant and savage patriotism, which puts the blame for every political folly or social misfortune upon the foreigner.

Adolf Hitler

• Terrorism is the best political weapon, for nothing drives people harder than a fear of sudden death.
• I have not come into this world to make men better, but to make use of their weaknesses.
• What good fortune for those in power that people do not think.
• I have sympathy for Mr. Roosevelt, because he marches straight toward his objectives over Congress, lobbies and bureaucracy.
• [I]n the simplicity of their minds, [people] more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie… It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have such impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Liberals, who are simple creatures lacking in nuance and are in need of constant supervision, are high-fiving each other over the decision of a Texas grand jury to indict the videomakers behind a series of heartbreaking, stomach-churning exposés of shady practices at Planned Parenthood, while bringing no charges against the Benihana baby butchers.

“You see!” the liberals cheer, “this means that the videos were all lies and Planned Parenthood never did anything wrong!“

Not surprisingly (and certainly not for the first time), the anti-life Lefties couldn’t be more wrong.

There are really two entirely distinct issues on the table (not that “the table” is anyplace you’d want to be inside a Planned Parenthood): what the videomakers and clinicians actually did, and how those actions are judged by the law. 

The videomakers lied and forged fake identification to get their hidden cameras into Planned Parenthood, and this is against the law. And they surely knew it was against the law and took the risk anyway because sometimes that’s what has to be done when authorities won’t act. How many civil rights marchers, black and white, were legally arrested when trying to end segregation? Breaking the law doesn’t necessarily make your cause wrong.

In Europe and America, revolutions are brewing. They are peaceful and democratic, but they are going to send the elites home that are running our nations into the ground.

I have just reread Ronald Reagan’s 1982 Westminster speech, in which he predicted that freedom and democracy would soon send the communist dictatorships in Eastern Europe and Russia to “the ash heap of history.”

Reagan spoke of “Poland’s struggle to be Poland.” And today, three decades later, history is about to repeat itself in the United States and in several West European countries. Of course, I am not comparing our current political elite with the Communist dictatorships with their prison cells for dissidents, but the fight of a nation to be itself, remain itself and defend its identity, that fight is also being waged today.

We are witnessing America’s struggle to be America, and the struggle of several European nations, among them the Netherlands, Britain, France, Germany and many others to preserve their identity and liberty, to remain the Netherlands, Britain, France, Germany. Everywhere, patriots are on the march. We are living the Patriot Spring.

We have not seen global economic activity fall off this rapidly since the great recession of 2008.  Manufacturing activity is imploding all over the planet, global trade is slowing down at a pace that is extremely alarming, and the Baltic Dry Index just hit another brand new all-time record low.  If the “real economy” consists of people making, selling and shipping stuff, then it is in incredibly bad shape.  Here in the United States, the dismal economic numbers continue to stun all of the experts.  For example, on Monday we learned that the Texas general business activity index just hit a six year low…

Economic activity in Texas keeps getting worse.

The general business activity index out Monday from the Dallas Federal Reserve for January was -34.6, a six-year low and much worse than economists had expected.

The forecast for the monthly index was -14, following a December reading of -21.6 (revised from -20.1) that was also worse than expected.

One could perhaps argue that this is to be expected in Texas because of the collapse in the price of oil.

But what about the very unusual things that we are seeing in other areas of the country?  In Erwin, Tennessee, a rail terminal that had been continuously operating for 135 years was just permanently shut down, and hundreds of workers now find themselves without a job…

Here’s a flashback for you – American “Social Democrats” protesting the war against Nazi Germany. They wanted then what they want now – a ‘Socialist’ state with absolute authority…just like Nazi Germany.  These are the same “Social Democrats” who defended slavery, practiced the most vile and ruthless racist acts, and authored the hundred years of Jim Crow laws throughout the South.  They were the core of the “Social Hygiene” movement in the golden age of progressivism – Social Hygiene, a.k.a. the elimination of “inferior persons” because they deemed them to be “a burden upon society”.

And who were these “inferior persons” which the Social Democrats wanted to eliminate through their Social Hygeine programs?  Well, the short list includes all of the following – Blacks, Jews, Gypsies, Homosexuals, those with developmental and/or emotional deficiencies, chronic drug and alcohol abusers, ‘peeping toms’, and a whole laundry list which the deemed “suitable reasons” to sterilize, institutionalize, and ultimately euthanize their way to a perfect society.  No wonder they admired Hitler.

Makes you think about Obama’s ‘mental health’ criteria in a whole new light, doesn’t it?
