Celebrating China’s First Bond Default: Copper Limit Down, Yuan Crashes Most In Six Years

It would appear the fecal matter is starting to come into contact with the rotating object in China. Worrying headlines are beginning to mount on the back of real economic events (an actual default and a collapse in exports):

  • *COPPER IN SHANGHAI FALLS BY 5% DAILY LIMIT TO 46,670 YUAN A TON
  • *CHINA YUAN WEAKENS 0.46% TO 6.1564 VS U.S. DOLLAR
  • *YUAN DROPS MOST SINCE 2008

Aside from that Iron ore prices are crumbling, Asian stocks are dropping, Chinese corporate bond prices are falling at their fastest pace in almost 4 months, and all this as 7-day repo drops to one-year lows (as banks hoard liquidity).

The Appalachian Redoubt

I’ll always remember former SecDef Donald Rumsfeld for a few things.  For one, he read one of my intelligence products when I was a young PFC in Afghanistan (some staff hoople head briefed it to him but it was a big deal to me at the time), but for two, it’s this quote:

…you go to war with the army you have – not the army you might want or wish to have…

He got blasted (deservedly) for this comment, not because it’s not true but because he was sending troops into Iraq and Afghanistan without armored vehicles.  But, still, he stated a universal truth: you have to make do with what you have.

Last week, Sandman posted a map of the Appalachians based off a 1921 study of culture and geographic terrain.  It generated a lot of interest.  Although not new, this concept of the Appalachian Redoubt finally got the attention it deserves.

Apartheid in America?

Jesse Jackson was on NBC News “Meet the Press” recently and made one of his trademark idiotic statements —“Apartheid remains” in America. Apartheid is a government policy or system of segregation or discrimination on grounds of race. But on closer examination — unbeknownst to Jackson, he got it about right.

Jackson went on to say “Apartheid gaps in poverty and healthcare and education. We’re in the middle of the end of the apartheid struggle even now —it’s just changing phases.” Indeed blacks are segregated and discriminated on in America —just not quite in the sense that the reverend contends.

The first thing one must understand before attempting to digest anything that Jackson, Sharpton, and the rest of the race pimps might say is that in their narrow world —everything centers around race. Without racism, or at least the perception of racism, those reverends who foment division along racial lines would merely be obscure preachers.

The point that Jackson has (even though it wasn’t his point) is that the American government has been, and continues to be responsible for much of the despair within the black community. Perhaps it would be beneficial to discuss the three areas that Jackson contends still is influenced by apartheid. Continue reading →

It’s happened – China has suffered its first domestic corporate bond default as Chaori fails to meet interest payments on schedule and rather more surprisingly failed to receive a last-minute mysterious or otherwise bailout…

Obama And Putin Are Trapped In A Macho Game Of “Chicken” And The Whole World Could Pay The Price

The U.S. government and the Russian government have both been forced into positions where neither one of them can afford to back down.  If Barack Obama backs down, he will be greatly criticized for being “weak” and for having been beaten by Vladimir Putin once again.  If Putin backs down, he will be greatly criticized for being “weak” and for abandoning the Russians that live in Crimea.  In essence, Obama and Putin find themselves trapped in a macho game of “chicken” and critics on both sides stand ready to pounce on the one who backs down.  But this is not just an innocent game of “chicken” from a fifties movie.  This is the real deal, and if nobody backs down the entire world will pay the price.

Leaving aside who is to blame for a moment, it is really frightening to think that we may be approaching the tensest moment in U.S.-Russian relations since the Cuban missile crisis.

There has been much talk about Obama’s “red lines”, but the truth is that Crimea (and in particular the naval base at Sevastopol) is a “red line” for Russia.

The Israeli naval commandos’ seizure of the Iranian missile ship KLOS C Wednesday, March 6, was the second time in ten days that the IDF had poked a finger in the eye of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, head of the al Qods Brigades, the intelligence-cum-terrorist arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). The first instance was the Israeli air strike on Feb. 24 against Hizballah’s arms convoys and missiles on the Lebanese-Syrian border.

In reference to the ship carrying dozens of Syrian-made 302mm rockets from Iran to the Gaza Strip, Israeli military intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Aviv Kochavi said Thursday, March 6, “We know who was behind this operation and who ran it from start to finish, the Revolutionary Guards and al Qods.”

Al Qods supreme commander is Gen. Soleimani. His agents and operatives are planted deeply across the Syrian war front and in Hizballah’s organization in Lebanon.

DEBKAfile reports: Israel does not buy the distinction drawn by Iran’s leader Ayatollah Ali Khameini  for international consumption between the two arms of the Islamic regime: President Hassan Rouhani’s government for the respectable handling of diplomacy and foreign relations, and the IRGC, which is purportedly barred from nuclear negotiations and confined to running the regime’s military, subversive and terrorist operations in areas of conflict, such as Syria, Lebanon and Israel.

Putin rebuffs Obama as Ukraine crisis escalates

President Vladimir Putin rebuffed a warning from U.S. President Barack Obama over Moscow’s military intervention in Crimea, saying on Friday that Russia could not ignore calls for help from Russian speakers in Ukraine.

After an hour-long telephone call, Putin said in a statement that Moscow and Washington were still far apart on the situation in the former Soviet republic, where he said the new authorities had taken “absolutely illegitimate decisions on the eastern, southeastern and Crimea regions.

“Russia cannot ignore calls for help and it acts accordingly, in full compliance with international law,” Putin said.

The most serious east-west confrontation since the end of the Cold War escalated on Thursday when Crimea’s parliament, dominated by ethnic Russians, voted to join Russia. The region’s government set a referendum for March 16 – in just nine days’ time.
