Well, the women being photographed are not part of the 500,000 customers who signed on to boycott Target because of it’s bathroom policy. If they are still shopping at Target … and still using Target bathrooms … they must be willing to take on whatever comes.
In the late 80’s I was an Executive for Target. In a meeting with the Regional HR Director (I was also representing my boss) I made a case to terminate a Manager for non-performance of his position, after multiple written warnings…including a detailed final warning that he had violated. He was a likeable guy but was super lazy and both me and my boss had -- had enough. We were convinced he was never going to actually do his job and it was time for us to part ways.
After hearing why we wanted to terminate him (we had all our ducks in a row) the Regional HR Director hemmed and hawed and finally recommended yet another final warning…after we had already given the final warning? I was frustrated and surprised as this tough female Regional Director was cut throat…and was feared by many. Just as I was about to leave the closed door meeting the HR Director mentioned the lazy severely written up manager using his name and said…he is black right? (The manger we wanted to fire was white as was the HR Director but the lazy manager had a black sounding name).
I said: “No he’s white.”
She looked surprised and said: “How old is he?
I said: “38.”
Without flinching and with the cold snake eyed look that she was feared for she spit out a loud, “OH Yea…white male under 40…its open season!”
He was terminated the next day.
During the rest of my time with Target I saw what I called Diversity -- Perversity happening too often. Too many white males being passed over for promotions and women and minorities and especially female minorities being promoted over more qualified experienced whites males. It was understood that if you were female, a minority or especially a female minority you had a leg up…and if you were a white male under 40…and you stumbled…it really was open season.
Too many actions I witnessed weren’t affirmative…I saw them as reverse discrimination. The field should be level. I have zero…none…white guilt…PERIOD.
There are many, many outstanding qualities about the Target Organization. Personally I had a great experience and was promoted 5 times in 7 years and used my time with them as a career spring board, but it is a progressive company and tainted with that ideological disease to its bright blue bubble Minneapolis Minnesota Diversity -- Perversity core.
I will join the boycott….and It will be hard because Target is one of my favorite stores.
