True. What could Russia gain from doing this? If it can be proven that Ukraine launched the attack, the war will end and, hopefully, those responsible would be hanged.

It wouldn’t be the first time Ukraine has attacked it. If you’ll recall, Russia seized the area around Chernobyl early on in order to prevent such an attack, but Ukraine still shelled it with artillery.
Ukraine has repeatedly attacked the NPP at Zaporizhzhia and even at Smolensk NPP.
