That doesn’t surprise me. Small caliber, high energy rounds have a way of going through a lot of steel, even if it is hardened. Fact is, even 7.62x39 “AK” rounds (123 grains at 2250fps) will penetrate 3/8th steel at ranges below about 120 yards. Those who haven’t ever been the recipients of incoming fire have a tendency to under-estimate the power of even a “light” rifle round such as 5.56.

Put simply, there is no body armor which will assure your survival if you are faced with incoming rifle rounds. Many guys I know don’t bother with any BA at all -- they would rather run faster, and lay lower, and generally be better at staying out of the way of the bullets…

Personally, I consider BA as valuable for defensive operations such as stand-offs, and in that regard I prefer ceramic plates; but for runnin’ and gunnin’ -- I’d rather not run with the extra 18 pounds and all the bulk.

The issue with ceramic is that it sacrifices itself on your behalf. Be aware that it cannot take 2-3 aimed rounds in the exact same location; ceramic can legitimately take 4-5 rounds across the face before being considered compromised. The dynamic difference between the two is that the steel transfers the kinetic energy straight to your body, ceramic dissipates the kinetic energy.

Just a couple more tips you need to know in a fight.
